Message from the Athletic Director
Hello and welcome to the new Villa Julie College Athletics web site. Athletics is an important and exciting part of campus and community life at Villa Julie College. Whether you are a current student, alum, or a Mustang supporter, we believe Mustang athletics to be moving forward, under the leadership shown by President Dr. Kevin J. Manning, and our Board of Trustees.
Our website isn't the only thing changing here at VJC, as we embark on many new and exciting ventures. Although the College had a tremendous amount of success in the North Eastern Athletic Conference, winning three straight Presidents Cups, we felt it was a good time to make a change to a more local conference. We will be joining the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) in 19 of VJC's 20 teams at the start of the 2007-2008 academic year. This is a move I am particularly excited about in regards to the future of Mustang athletics because it will allow us to capitalize on existing relationships and collegiality with more proximate regional institutions. Greater challenges in terms of competition and more opportunities to compete in postseason play will also be afforded to our student-athletes as a result of the shift.
With less travel, our student-athletes will miss less class time and will allow us to increase our department Grade Point Average that much higher. This will assist in my and Academic Dean Paul Lack's vision of academic priorities within our program. I am proud to tell you that our 2006-2007 academic year Athletics Department G.P.A. was 2.93. We also had a record number of teams (11) score above a 3.0 on a 4.0 grading scale. Those teams were Women's Cross Country (3.48), Women's Volleyball (3.55), Women's Tennis (3.55), Men's Golf (3.35), Dance (3.30), Men's Cross Country (3.29), Softball (3.26), Men's Volleyball (3.12), Field Hockey (3.06), Cheerleading (3.03), and Women's Lacrosse (3.00).
Another recent change is the completion of the Caves Sports and Wellness Complex which came to fruition through the tireless and aggressive approach of Vice President Tim Campbell. Caves houses locker rooms that rival those that house professional athletes, equipped with sofas and plasma screens. These locker rooms also allow our coaches to plug in for team meetings and film sessions. In addition to a fully equipped, modern fitness center, Villa's students can take advantage of the building's racquet ball court. A domed turf facility allows for focused practice in inclement weather, and provides ample recreational space for students. A full-service, professional training room ensures the health and comfort of Villa's student-athletes.
I would also like to take this time to convey the departments' excitement of Villa Julie College's 60th anniversary of its founding. President Manning has set up some exciting celebrations, but I wanted to take a moment and highlight one event. On October 1, 2007, we will commemorate Founder's Day, recognizing the accomplishments of the amazing women who played a role in the founding of the College as well as honoring those who have contributed - and continue to contribute - to Villa Julie's vitality today.
Thank you very much for your time, and GO MUSTANGS!
Brett C. Adams
