History of Villa Julie College

For 60 years, Villa Julie College has played a critical role in bringing students and employees together.  Founded in 1947 as a one-year college, Villa Julie has grown into the third-largest, independent coeducational College in Maryland in terms of undergraduate enrollment.  Students can now choose from a wide array of degree programs, including four master's degrees and several accelerated adult degree programs.

In the past six years, Villa Julie has grown from nearly 1,800 full time undergraduates to more than 2,300.  The College has managed this growth by opening a second campus in Owings Mills to supplement the original Stevenson campus.  The nearly 100-acre Owings Mille site hosts 10 new residential housing buildings, a new student dining center, classrooms, offices and a sports and wellness center at the former training site used by Baltimore's two National Football League teams.  The Stevenson campus has changed at the same time with new space for undergraduate science research and a welcoming space for tutoring and academic support.

All of this growth and change, however, has not changed the College's focus on being a national leader in coeducational career education, with more than 25 career-oriented traditional bachelor's degree programs.  It is the only college in the United States to offer Career Architecture SM, a process to help students design their future by identifying personal core values and career goals.  Over the past five years, exceptional career preparation has enabled an average of 97 percent of Villa Julie graduates to obtain jobs or proceed on to graduate school within six months of graduation.

Today, Villa Julie continues its dedication to the two touchstones which have shaped its educational philosophy from the start: respect for the dignity and needs of each student and an ever-developing educational program that broadens students' horizons.  The College's educational program continues to evolve so as to respond creatively and practically to the needs of contemporary society.

One of the most visible signs of this evolution is the addition of the forensic studies master's degree program, which was unveiled in June 2004.  Within two years, the program had met its five-year enrollment goals and an online version of the program was developed to meet the national need for forensic investigators.  The first online students began taking classes in August 2006.

The undergraduate program has also filled the needs of the rapidly changing job market.  The four-year Medical Technology degree was developed in 2005 to help fill much-needed positions in the medical community while a bachelor's degree in Public History debuted in 2006, aimed to take advantage of Villa Julie's existing programs and to teach students how to make historical subjects come to life in a variety of venues.

Outside of the classroom, Villa Julie undergraduate students can choose from more than 20 NCAA Division 3 sports and a growing number of activities, including musicians, comedians and authors visiting Stevenson and Owings Mills.  Villa Julie students now have the opportunity to experience the best of both worlds at two exciting locations.  Villa Julie remains a dynamic institution with students interested in modern learning at a place where teachers and staff members often know them by name.
