Stevenson Sixth in CAC All-Sports Award Standings
YORK, Pa. - For the second-straight year, Stevenson University finished in sixth place in the race for the CAC's Richard C. Cook All-Sports Award which is given annually to the conference's top overall athletics program. Salisbury won its fourth-straight award and seventh since 1999.
The Sea Gulls finished first amongst the nine CAC schools with 180.00 points, 16.5 ahead of second-place Mary Washington who totaled 163.50 points. York (Pa.) finished third, followed by St. Mary's (Md.), Wesley, Stevenson, Hood, Marymount (Va.) and Gallaudet.
The Mustangs finished with 78.67 points, just 1.5 behind Wesley for fifth and 14.67 in front of seventh-place Hood.
Stevenson's total was an improvement of 7.5 points over last year's total due largely to the fact the women's sports totaled 41.17 points, the fifth-most among the nine conference schools and an improvement from 33.17 points and seventh place a year ago.
The field hockey and women's volleyball teams both set school records for wins in a season while advancing to the CAC semifinals and the women's soccer team advanced to the quarterfinals of the ECAC Division III South Championship after finishing with 11 wins which included a 5-1-2 conference record.
On the men's side, Stevenson also placed fifth with a total of 37.50 points, one ahead of sixth-place St. Mary's (Md.). The Mustangs were led by the men's lacrosse and baseball teams who each advanced to the CAC championship game.
The men's lacrosse team also won the CAC regular season title after finishing undefeated in conference play for the first time in team history.
The all-sports award was first established in 1992. It is based on a new point system approved by the CAC Board of Directors in 2008. It was re-named in December 2007 to honor the 15-years of service by former commissioner Richard C. Cook.
The point system awards nine "base" points for the top team in the regular season, eight points for second place, seven points for third place, etc. Teams can also score additional points (maximum of three) for success in CAC championship tournaments.
In sports that have team titles decided only by postseason championship events, points are awarded based on the standings. Playoff points are awarded to the top four teams (three for first place, two for second place, one for third and fourth place).
In all 19 sports, the top team can gain a maximum of 12 points while the last team earns one point.
This was the second year that the conference recognized institutions scoring the most points in men's sports and women's sports. Salisbury swept the men's and women's commissioner's award for the second consecutive year.
