Villa Mustangs finish runner up in Conference Tournament
La Plume, PA.-- The Mustangs opened game 1 with a vengence against Cazenovia College who upset the Mustangs earlier in the season. In the bottom of the first Villa put up 7 runs, followed by 3 in the 3rd, and 7 more in the 4th as they pounded Cazenovia 24-3. Sr Garrett Sanders pitched 8 innings allowing 0 earned runs to pick up his 6th victory of the season. Offensively, So Ryan Baione was 4-6, 4 runs scored, 5 RBI's, on 2 doubles, Jr Buddy Breidenbaugh was 3-6 with 4 RBI's, So Griffin Stewart was 2-5 with 5 RBI's, and Sr Dave Brown chipped in with 3 hits and 2 RBI's.
In game 2, the Mustangs faced surprising Penn State-Berks, but the Mustangs again came out with a vengence outscoring PSU Berks 11-1 behind Jr Buddy Breidenbaugh's complete game 11 K performance. Offensively, again So Ryan Baione was 3-4 with 2 RBI's on a Home Run to left. Chipping in with 2 hits each were Jr Alex Laddbush, So Griffin Stewart, Sr Kevin Rodgers, and Jr Nick Deaner.
Game 3, was the showdown between #1 and #2, Keystone vs Villa Julie. Both had their aces on the mound and for much of the game the Mustangs were in control leading 5-2, and 6-4. But a couple of key hits in the 7th, game the Giants a 7-6 lead, and they tacked on 1 more in the 9th to seal the game. The Mustangs Wade Keenan, pitched 8.1 innings allowing 4 earned runs while striking out 9. The Mustangs had an opportunity in the 8th to take the lead as they loaded the bases with 0 outs, but Giants Ace Yadiel Lanzo got out of it unscaved to help preserve the victory. Offensively, Jr Nick Deaner was 3-4 with 2 runs scored, and Fr John Cummings was 3-5 with 2 RBI's.
Game 4, would be a rematch to finish the conference tournament. Again, the Mustangs pitching was terrific as So Chris Hayden kept the Giants in check allowing just 2 ER in 6.1 innings. After 8 innings of play the game was tight at 2-1, but in the top of the 9th, the Mustangs ran out of gas and allowed 4 runs. When it seemed like it was over, the Mustangs battled back in the bottom of the 9th to score 2 runs, and with the bases loaded, and the go ahead run coming to the plate, the drama was on. So Griffin Stewart, who just hit a solo homerun at this field last week, was up to bat with the chance to end it. The Giants got the better of him and the game ended on a pop up to crown the Giants Tournament Champions. Offensively, Fr Brian Moran was 2-4 with 2 RBI's to pace the Mustangs.
Although dissappointing the Keystone Giants are provisional members of NCAA division III and cannot proceed to postseason, therefore the Mustangs will accept the automatic bid to represent the NEAC Conference in the regionals set to begin on May 17th. The Mustangs have 2 more home games before then, scheduled for May 10th vs Mary Washington at 5 pm at Bachman Sports complex.
