VJC Baseball Returns from Spring Break, 4-1

Myrtle Beach, SC - The Villa Julie Mustangs stepped on the turf fields at the Ripken Experience Complex in Myrtle Beach South Carolina and blew away the competition. The Mustangs soaked up the beautiful weather and in the impressive surroundings the team showed their offensive power.

Game 1 on Tuesday was against Rochester Institute of Technology and Sophomore Derrick Nason got the start pitching 7 innings allowing 4 earned runs and picking up his first victory of the season.  Offensively the Mustangs exploded in the 2nd inning scoring 8, and finished by beating RIT 17-8.  Offensively, Junior Ryan Baione was 2-4 with 4 RBI's. Junior Wade Keenan finished 2-3 with a solo HR, and 2 RBI's.  Sophomore George Papuchis, and Junior Brett Steele each added 1 HR and 2 RBI's.

In the night game, the Mustangs faced off against former NEAC foe, Philadelphia Biblical University.  Senior Phil Kraska started, and threw 5 innings with 7 strikeouts, as the Mustangs scored 38 runs and defeated PBU 38-2.  Offensively, Freshman Nick Sydnor came of the bench to hit a grand slam, and a 3 run home run and finished 2-4 with 2 HR's, and 9 RBI's.  Senior Nick Deaner finished 5-7 with 5 runs scored and 4 RBI's.

On Wednesday, Villa Julie faced off against Catholic University. The Mustang bats continued to produce as they scored another 25 runs enroute to a 25-8 victory.  Senior Buddy Breidenbaugh pitched 6 innings allowing just 3 ER's, with 6 K's.  Freshman Kyle Van Beek finished the day 4-6 with a HR and 4 RBI's and a stolen base.  Senior Alex Laddbush finished 4-6 with a HR and 3 RBI's. Junior Griffin Stewart was 4-5 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI's.

On Thursday, Villa Julie again faced off against Catholic University.  The bats were subdued, but still enough to win the game 10-5.  Keenan ran his record to 4-0 by pitching 8 innings allowing just 2 earned runs, while striking out 10. Offensively both Stewart and Papuchis had 3 hits with 2 RBI's each.  Papuchis hit his 2nd home run of the season.  

In the evening game vs RIT, the Mustang bats cooled and only scored 6 runs as they were handed their first Spring Break loss, dropping a heartbreaker in the bottom of the 9th 7-6.  After a leadoff walk in the 9th, RIT used a bunt hit and 2 bloops to score the winning run. Offensively, Keenan had 2 hits including a solo Home Run.  Papuchis and Freshman Dustin Tarlow each added 2 hits on the game with an RBI each, but it wasn't enought to finish the trip undefeated.

All in all, the Mustangs hit .407 with 17 doubles, 3 triples, 12 homeruns, 96 runs, 85 RBI's with .674 slugging percentage and a .522 on base percentage.  With a record of 4-1 on the trip, it was the Mustangs most successful trip.  The Mustangs are now 7-5-1 heading into home games on Tuesday vs McDaniel, and Wednesday vs Salisbury.
