Eckert Leads Mustangs to 8-6 Road Win at Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Stevenson University baseball senior Max Eckert (Hyattsville/Perkiomen Prep) went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, a double and a game-winning two-run home run in the fifth to lead the Mustangs to an 8-6 victory at Lynchburg Tuesday afternoon at Fox Field.

The win was the sixth-straight for the Mustangs (9-2) who received one vote in Monday's D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25 Poll.

Meanwhile, the loss was just the fourth in the last 11 games for the Hornets (9-6) who were ranked at No. 14 in the ABCA/Collegiate Baseball Division III Preseason Poll. The team is currently receiving votes in he D3baseball.com poll after being ranked at No. 20 in the preseason and at No. 24 last week.

Stevenson totaled 15 hits, seven of which went for extra bases, including four doubles, two triples and one home run. The team scored at least one run in four of the first five innings, including four in the first three.

Trailing 5-4 after four, the Mustangs took the lead for good just two batters into the fifth when Eckert hit his team-leading fourth home run of the season to left field, driving in senior Wade Keenan (Eldersburg/Liberty) who reached on a fielding error to lead off the inning.

Senior Griffin Stewart (Reisterstown/Bel Air) also finished the game with three RBIs, going 4-for-5 at the plate while senior Ryan Baione (Waldorf/Westlake) extended his hit streak to nine games after he went 3-for-5 with four runs and an RBI.

The senior trio of Eckert, Stewart and Baione was 10-for-14 with seven RBIs and six runs on the day. Each hit doubles in the third for the Mustangs as they scored two runs to take a 4-2 lead.

Sophomore John Skrynecki (Ellicott City/Cardinal Gibbons) picked up his first win in his first appearance of the season after entering the game in the fourth in relief of freshman D.J. Milliken (Owings/Northern).

Junior Brian Spinazzola (Baltimore/Boys Latin) earned his first save after holding Lynchburg scoreless over the final 4.1 innings while allowing just three hits and striking out two.

Hornet starter Joe Devlin took the loss after allowing six runs on nine hits over the first four innings.

Stevenson continues its four-game road trip on Wednesday with the first of two games against N.C. Wesleyan at at Bauer Field in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m.
