Stevenson Baseball Announces 2010 Incoming Recruits

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson baseball eighth-year head coach Jason Tawney announced the addition of 21 newcomers to the 2010 team who opens its 11th season on Saturday, February 13 with a doubleheader at Hampden-Sydney.
"This is the largest group of newcomers we have ever brought into our program," said Tawney. "Last season's injuries were an Achilles heel to this team. Over the past two years, we've graduated much of our roster and this new class will be the core of our program going forward."
"This season, our depth will be our strength. With all the injuries we suffered last year and graduation, we felt we needed this to get our program back to where it should be. If this group develops properly and comes together as a team, they could propel the Mustangs back to the playoffs."
The Mustangs are entering their third season in the CAC in 2010 after finishing 18-26-1 a year ago and advancing to the conference championship game. Four different teams appeared in the NCAA regional championship over the last four years, including two last season.
A list of this year's newcomers with information on each from Tawney is below.
Tyler Anzmann, P, So. (Westminster HS/Mary
Washington)
"Randy comes to Stevenson after spending a year
at CAC rival Mary Washington. Arm strength is not Tyler's
issue. He throws hard and can have dominating stuff, however
his control can be an issue. If Tyler harnesses his control,
he will be a big contributor to our program in the spring."
Jeff Bihy, OF/1B, Jr. (Eastern Tech HS/CCBC Essex)
"Jeff spent two years at CCBC Essex as their
number three hitter. Jeff played first base at Essex, but
will probably play outfield, first base and DH for us. He has a
terrific bat and will be a major part of our lineup come
spring. Jeff will also help as a left handed pitcher out
of the bullpen."
Brad Blum, Fr., SS/2B, (Magruder HS)
"At Magruder, Brad was an everyday shortstop. He
has showcased that he can play both shortstop and second
base at the college level. Like most freshman to really
force our hand, he will need to work hard in the offseason to
get bigger and stronger."
Matt Bratter, C, Fr. (Mount Olive HS, New Jersey)
"Matt was a catcher and third basemen at Mount Olive
while batting third in their lineup. He is raw behind the
plate, but offensively he had a very impressive fall. We
brought him here because he is a big strong kid that we think will
develop into a middle of the order presence in our everyday
lineup. Matt will be working on refining his skills behind the
dish to try and force his way into the lineup."
Josh Brundige, P, Jr. (Lee University,
Tenn.)
"Josh spent three seasons at NAIA powerhouse Lee
University before deciding to transfer this offseason. He has
the potential to be our number one guy, but he was
slowed this fall by tendonitis. He red-shirted last season and
is focusing on getting completely healthy. Josh was a member
of two teams that competed in the NAIA World Series."
James Castellano, P, Fr. (Morris Hills HS, New
Jersey)
"James was the number two starter at Morris
Hill and played outfield when not on the hill. He is
a very impressive freshman on the mound. He's loose, confident and
will be counted on heavily as a freshman to really help our staff
throughout the season both as a starter and in the
bullpen. James commands three pitches and can be
overpowering at times. More importantly he is very
comfortable on the hill and his future is still ahead of
him. If he puts the work in, the future is limitless."
Josh Cook, C/OF, Fr. (The Coventry School)
"Josh was the top catcher at Coventry and is very
athletic. He is also raw and needs to get bigger and stronger
to make an impact on our club. Josh will look to help behind
the plate and use his athletic ability in the outfield."
Tyler Corrado, 1B/OF, Fr. (St. Mark's HS, Delaware)
"St. Marks is known for their talent as they are routinely
the top high school program in the state of Delaware. Tyler
has showcased a terrific glove at first base and as he
develops into his 6-foot, 2-inch frame, he will be a player to be
reckoned with in our lineup."
Chris DeFeo, SS, Fr. (Long Reach HS)
"At Long Reach, Chris was the starting shortstop
and one of their top pitchers. He had a terrific opportunity
this fall with our starting senior shortstop out due to injury
so we got an extended look at him. He is an impressive player
that will fill in nicely as Ryan Baione is recovering from arm
surgery. Chris played his way into that position with an
outstanding fall. He has a strong arm and steady hands at
short as well as a short stroke which allows him to drive
the ball to all fields."
Joe Gollotto, 3B, Fr. (Eastern Regional HS, New
Jersey)
"Joe was our top freshman hitter coming in, but a leg
injury has really derailed him for the time being. He is still
recovering from a compound fracture of his shin bone from high
school. We just hope to get him healthy and on the field in the
spring."
Andrew Haab, P, Fr. (Old Mill HS)
"At Old Mill, Andrew was one of their top starters.
He is a big kid at 6-4, 220 pounds and when he realizes his
potential, he will be one of our top starters. Andrew has the
stuff to pitch in the rotation, but needs to develop more
consistency."
Ben Henry, C, So. (St. Mary's HS/York (Pa.))
"Ben spent one season at York (Pa.)
and will help deepen our core of catchers. He receives
well and has a terrific relationship with the staff."
Alex Hosier, 3B, Fr. (Baltimore Lutheran HS)
At Baltimore Lutheran, Alex was a part of the MIAA
playoffs last season as their starting third baseman. He has a
strong glove and short compact swing. He's got a shot to get
some legitimate playing time. Alex, like many other freshmen,
needs to work on getting stronger to adjust to the college game."
Heath Johnson, OF, Fr. (Charter School
of Wilmington, Delaware)
"Heath was Charter's leadoff hitter and played
both centerfield and second base as well as
pitched. He has speed, a good arm, a good glove and a
very gritty attitude. He did some things in the fall that caught
the attention of the staff. Heath is fighting for a starting
spot in the outfield and this offseason will be very important for
him."
Brandon Krochune, 3B/P, Jr. (Digital Harbor/Anne Arundel
CC)
"Brandon spent two seasons at AACC and is a very
impressive left handed hitter that will make an immediate impact in
the middle of our lineup. He also has surprised us with his
savvy glove at third and his ability to be a rotation pitcher.
Brandon will be counted on heavily to duplicate his impressive JUCO
numbers."
Eric Kron, C, Fr. (Patuxent HS)
"At Patuxent, Eric was the starting catcher for a strong
high school team. He has a strong arm and a strong body. He's
raw and needs some work, but is arguably the strongest of the
freshman."
Nick Samuel, 2B, So. (Raritan Valley CC, New Jersey)
"Nick spent two seasons at Raritan Valley CC,
including last season where he needed to red-shirt due to a rotator
cuff injury. He needs to get healthy and improve his arm
strength, but he does swing the bat from the left side and he
gives us a little different dimension at second base."
Cody Schuchman, 2B, Jr. (Calvert Hall/CCBC
Essex)
"At Essex, Cody was an everyday player at second base
until last season when a broken foot set him back. We
expect him to compete for the starting job here. He is
very savvy around the bag and is very strong defensively. Cody
needs to hit consistently to find himself in the starting
lineup, but he is a very strong addition to the club."
Chris Street, P,
Fr. (Resevoir HS/Salisbury)
"Chris spent one year at Salisbury, but did not
play due to lingering arm troubles. He is recovering from
shoulder surgery in August and has been out for the entire fall.
Once healthy, Chris is going to be an exciting player for us, but
his first goal is to get healthy. He has the potential to be
one of our top starters once he recovers from surgery."
Joe Wamba, P/OF, Fr. (St. Elizabeth's HS, Delaware)
"At St. Elizabeth's, Joe primarily played DH. He
needs to get stronger to compete at this level everyday. I like
what I have seen from him on the mound and he's a dependable
outfielder. He just needs to get stronger."
Sam Wertz, P/1B, Fr. (North Carroll HS)
"Sam, like a few other freshmen, have been injured in
the fall. His arm troubles have held him back and he
needs to get healthy for us to properly evaluate his abilities."
