GREENSBORO, N.C. - Juniors Brandon Krochune (Baltimore/Digital Harbor) and Josh Brundige (Brookeville/East Jessamine) combined for a four-hitter in game two of a doubleheader at Greensboro Saturday as the Mustangs opened the 2010 season with a sweep of The Pride at War Memorial Stadium, 11-10 and 3-1.
After an offensive outburst in game in which the two teams combined for 21 runs on 25 hits, Krochune allowed one run on two hits and struck out three over four innings to pick up his first win before Brundige surrendered two hits and struck out three over the final three to pick up his first save.
Greensboro took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Grant Kelley before Krochune led of the second with a single and then scored to tie the game on a single to left by junior Cody Schuchman (Baltimore/Calvert Hall).
While Krochune and Brundige held The Pride scoreless over the final six innings, Stevenson took a two-run lead with two unearned runs in the top of fifth on RBI singles by junior Steve Krider (Westminster/Westminster) and freshman Heath Johnson (New Castle, Del./Charter School of Wilmington).
Krochune and Krider each went 2-for-3 while Schuchman was 1-for-1 with an RBI.
In game one, the Mustangs (2-0) trailed 5-0 after one and 6-1 after two before rallying for the one-run victory.
Trailing 8-3 headed into the top of the fourth, the Mustangs scored six runs to take a 9-8 lead, highlighted by a two-run single by sophomore Justin Anderson (Shrewsbury, Pa./Calvert Hall) and a bases loaded walk from junior Jeff Bihy (Baltimore/Eastern Tech).
Senior George Papuchis (Damascus/Good Counsel) also had an RBI single before scoring the go-ahead run on a sacrifice to left by sophomore Joe Robak (Baltimore/Calvert Hall).
Greensboro took back the lead on a two-run double to left by Josh Montague in the bottom of the fifth before Robak drove in Papuchis in the sixth to tie the game and later scored the game-winning run on a two-out single by senior Dan Leonard (Cambridge/South Dorchester).
Anderson, Papuchis and Robak each had two hits and two RBIs while Krochune also had two RBIs and was 1-for-2. Senior Ryan Baione (Waldorf/Westlake) was 3-for-5.
Sophomore Patrick Quinn (Mt. Airy/Linganore) picked up his first career win on the mound after scattering four hits over three innings and striking out three. Senior Derrick Nason (Catonsville/Reservoir) earned the save after pitching a scoreless sixth and seventh.
Montague finished 3-for-5 with five RBIs to lead The Pride (0-2).
Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday when it opens CAC play with a nine-inning contest at Wesley beginning at 2:30 p.m.
