Schuchman Leads Baseball to 16-5 Victory at Gallaudet

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Stevenson baseball junior Cody Schuchman (Baltimore/Calvert Hall) went 3-for-3 with four RBIs as the Mustangs exploded for eight first-inning runs en route to a 16-5 CAC road victory over Gallaudet Thursday at Bison Field.

Stevenson (9-2, 4-2 CAC) totaled a season-high 16 runs, including eight in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run double to left by Schuchman. The team already led 3-0 before the Bison recorded the first out.

Freshman Matthew Bratter (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) then drew a bases loaded walk to increase the lead to four which signaled the end of the day for Gallaudet starter Tommy Barksdale.

Schuchman then drove in junior Jeff Bihy (Baltimore/Eastern Tech) and sophomore Joe Robak (Baltimore/Calvert Hall) for what proved to the game-winning runs.

Senior Ryan Baione (Waldorf/Westlake) followed with his second RBI of the inning to cap the scoring with a sacrifice to center that scored Schuchman and gave the Mustangs an 8-0 lead before the Bison even came to bat.

Schuchman added his third RBI in the second to increase the lead to nine before adding his second RBI double as part of a three-run fourth that pushed the lead to 12-0.

Bratter drew another bases loaded walk in the eighth and finished the game 1-for-4 with three RBIs and two walks.

Nine different players had at least one hit for the Mustangs, including freshman Heath Johnson (New Castle, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) and sophomore Justin Anderson (Shrewsbury, Pa./Calvert Hall) who had two each. Johnson and Baione also added two RBIs.

Junior Randy Bond (Brandywine/Riverdale Baptist) made his first start and earned the win after allowing just three hits and striking out three in five innings. He also did not allow an earned run.

Kyle and Chester Kuschmider each had two hits for Gallaudet (0-7, 0-6 CAC) while Chester had two RBIs. Barksdale suffered his second loss after surrendering seven runs, four hits and three walks while facing just eight batters.

Stevenson and Gallaudet wrap-up their three-game series on Friday with a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium Field beginning at 2:00 p.m.
