Tawney enters his eighth season as the head baseball coach at Stevenson in 2010 after leading the Mustangs to the CAC championship series a year ago.

Under Tawney, Stevenson has amassed two NEAC regular season championships, three second place finishes in the NEAC conference tournament and one in the CAC. The Mustangs have also posted 13 victories over nationally-ranked teams.

In addition, numerous players have earned both conference and regional recognition.

Stevenson has won at least 24 games in four of the last five seasons, including a school record 29 in 2006. During that time, the Mustangs won 118 games and two NEAC regular season championships while making three NEAC and one CAC championship game appearances.

During the 2008 season, Stevenson finished in the top 30 nationally in nine offensive categories, including doubles (124, 3rd), runs (420, 8th), hits (539, 8th) and triples (24, 9th). The Mustangs were also 24th with a .346 batting average and 28th with a .516 slugging percentage.

In 2007, Stevenson finished the season with its first-ever NCAA regional appearance, finishing the season with 24 wins. That team ranked 32nd in Division III in strikeouts per nine innings (7.3), 49th in batting average (.328) and 65th in ERA (4.01).

The Mustangs led the nation in stolen bases in 2002.

In addition to his role as head coach at Stevenson, Tawney is also a financial advisor and operates Edward Jones Investments in Catonsville. He has earned his Accredited Asset Management Specialist designation from Stevenson for financial planning and is in charge of hiring and recruiting for Edward Jones in the state of Maryland.

Tawney has also served as president of the Greater Catonsville Chamber of Commerce and on the Board of Directors for numerous non-profit organizations in the Baltimore area.

As a player, Tawney played three seasons at Division II Wingate as a member of three nationally-ranked teams before an injury cut his career short. He graduated with honors and earned his bachelor's degree in finance in 1999.

Prior to joining the Bulldogs, Tawney was a four-year letterman and two-year captain at North Carroll High School, earning all-conference and all-county honors as a junior and senior.

Tawney began his career as a member of the inaugural Carroll County Rangers in 1991. With the 18U team in 1994, he was named offensive MVP and as a Baltimore Metro League All-Star after leading the team in numerous offensive categories.

Tawney currently resides in Mt. Airy with his wife Heather and their dogs, Haley (great dane), Reilly (cocker spaniel) and Floyd (miniature poodle).

 


Mark Chiveral

Title: Pitching Coach

Chiveral begins his 11th year at Stevenson in 2010 after having been promoted to senior assistant coach. He has served as the program's pitching coach ever since it began in 2000. His primary duties include overseeing the pitching staff and in-game bench coach.

During his tenure, Chiveral has developed the pitching staff as a key strength of the team.

In 2006, the pitching staff totaled the most wins in school history with 29 while posting a 4.00 ERA and holding opponents to an all-time low .259 batting average. A year later, Stevenson boasted 24 wins as a staff and had a 4.01 ERA with a school record 283 strikeouts. Freshman and sophomores also totaled close to 75 percent of the team's 348.1 innings.

The Mustangs won 25 games in 2005 while posting the second-most strikeouts in school history with 247 along with a 4.33 ERA. In 2008, the team had its fourth consecutive 20-win season while totaling 241 strikeouts.

In addition to his coaching duties, Chiveral works in the department of biostatistics at Johns Hopkins University. During the summer, he serves as a player/manager for the Degroen's Baseball Club of the Baltimore Baseball League.

Prior to Stevenson, Chiveral served as an assistant pitching coach at Loyola (Md.) for seven seasons.

A graduate of Patterson High School, Chiveral lettered in both football and baseball and had a totaled 18 wins as a pitcher for the Clipper Ships. He then attended CCBC Essex where he pitched for two seasons before graduating in 1985.

Chiveral and his wife, Suzanne, and daughter, Madelyn, reside in Arbutus.

 


Todd Perry

Perry returns for his fourth season at Stevenson in 2010 and has been elevated to pitching coach. During his previous three seasons, he assisted with the pitching staff while working primarily with the infield and assisting in recruiting.

A graduate of Catonsville High School, Perry was a four-year starting shortstop before spending four season on the pitching staff at Washington College (Md.) from 1997-2000.

During the summer, Perry has played for two semi-pro baseball teams, Spring Grove of the Baltimore Baseball League and the Susquehanna Assault of the Susquehanna League, both adult wooden bat leagues in Maryland.

Perry currently resides in Catonsville with his dog, Bo (boxer).

 


Chris Masters

Masters begins his second season at Stevenson in 2010, serving as the team's recruiting coordinator. He will be responsible for recruiting activities and official visits as well as outfield defense.

In addition to his work at Stevenson, Masters is an assistant strength and conditioning coach with Athletic Performance, Inc., in Millersville.

Masters is a 2007 graduate of North Carolina Wesleyan where he received his bachelor of science degree in exercise science and is currently working on becoming a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Masters played four years for the Battling Bishops from 2004-07 where he helped them to a USA South tournament title, a regular season conference championship and an NCAA regional championship. As a senior, helped lead N.C. Wesleyan to a 31-17 record and the championship of the 2006 NCAA Division III South Regional and the Division III World Series.

Throughout his playing career, Masters has been to the World Series seven times, four of them as a player and three as a coach.

Prior to N.C. Wesleyan, Masters was a standout at Howard High School where he was a four-year starter and all-county performer as a catcher. He was also a team captain as a senior.

During the summer, Masters also serves as an assistant coach for the Columbia Reds of the Maryland Collegiate Baseball League, an elite wooden bat summer league team for whom he once played for.

 


Nathan Roling

Roling returns for his second season as a graduate assistant at Stevenson in 2010. His main responsibilities are monitoring the academics of the student athletes, coordinating tutoring and monitoring study halls. He also serves as the head coach of the junior varsity program, first base coach and works with the catchers.

A 2008 graduate of Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, Roling received a bachelor's degree in sport management and business and is currently working on his master's degree in business and technology management at Stevenson.

While at Loras, Roling was a two-time Academic All-Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection and served as a team captain for the Duhawks as a senior. Prior to Loras, he spent one year at Iowa Central Community College.

Roling has an extensive background working camps and clinics as a hitting and catcher instructor. He spent the 2008 summer as the head coach for the Dubuque Wahlert High school freshman gold team.

Roling currently resides in Catonsville.

 


Wade Keenan

Keenan joins the coaching staff at Stevenson in 2010 following a stellar four-year playing career. His main responsibilities will be assisting with the team's pitching staff, but he will also help out in all areas as well.

During his four seasons with the Mustangs from 2005-08, Keenan was a four-time first team all-conference selection, four-time team Most Valuable Player and a three-time ABCA All-South Region honoree. He was also named Stevenson's Outstanding Male Athlete in 2009.

Keenan totaled a .366 career batting average with 185 hits, 96 RBIs and 53 stolen bases along with 16 wins, 10 complete games, five saves, a school-record 235 strikeouts and a 3.24 ERA in 247.2 innings.

In the summer of 2009, Keenan served as head coach of the Maryland Orioles, guiding the team to a 20-8 record and the Maryland Collegiate Baseball League championship.

Keenan currently works for Northrop Grumman and resides in Owings Mills.
