2007 Field Hockey Preview
Owings Mills, MD.- Coach Kathy Railey is excited about her appointment as the new Field Hockey Coach at Villa Julie College. Railey has a wealth of knowledge in the sport as she has been the head field hockey coach at Western Maryland College (McDaniel College), Goucher College, and most recently at Eastern Connecticticut State University. Railey takes over a program that struggled in their first season in the Capital Athletic Conference in 2006 as they went 1-5 in conference and 5-15 overall. The bulk of the Mustangs roster is made up of newcomers, as 16 of their 25 players are rookie Mustangs.
The Villa kicks off its season in style as they host the fifth-annual Black-Eyed Susan Tournament on September 1st and 2nd. The field is littered with stiff competition as SUNY-Cortland is currently ranked #4 in the NFHCA pre-season poll. Their opponent for the first game is Johns Hopkins University who is currently ranked 17th in the NFCA poll. The Mustangs' first opponent is Bridgewater College, whom they lost to in the 2006 season 5-0. The second game of the tournament will be determined by the results of Day 1.
The Mustangs then welcome conference opponent St. Mary's College on September 6th and (whatever conference) Randolph-Macon College on September 9th to Owings Mills. VJ then has its four-game home stand come to an end as they travel to the 19th ranked Lynchburg Hornets. Lynchburg has also been chosen to win the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Mustangs make it a back-to-back as they play Randolph College (formerly Randolph Macon Women's College) at noon on Sunday.
Villa then comes home to the friendly confines of the old Ravens Practice facility as they host two Washington's. First Washington College comes in on September 18th and then Washington & Lee University makes their way to Owings Mills on September 22nd. W & L was picked to finish 2nd in the ODAC, just a few votes behind favorite Lynchburg College.
VJ then makes the short trip up I-83 to York College for a CAC tilt. The Mustangs fell to York at home in 2006, 3-2 in overtime. Villa then begins a 3 game home stand as they host CAC foe University of Mary Washington, Sweet Briar College, and CAC opponent Hood College.
The Mustangs then take to the road once again to face Lebanon
Valley College who is ranked #8 in the preseason NFCA poll.
CAC foe Wesley College then comes to town on October
11th for a 4:30pm start.
The final three out of four games are on the road as the Mustangs
travel to Catholic, #6 Salisbury University, and Goucher College,
with a home contest versus Frostburg University thrown in the
middle.
Senior midfielder Cat Connelly (Fallston, MD/Fallston), junior forward Emily Pullarn (Perry Hall, MD/Perry Hall), junior forward Krissy Leventis (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Lutheran), sophomore forward Raechel Manly (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air), and All CAC Midfielder Sarah Bauer (Baltimore, MD/Perry Hall) will lead the team and show the newcomers what it takes to compete in one of the most difficult conferences in the country.
Out of the16 additions, freshman defenders Rachael Dell (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll) and Christie Greer (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air); freshman midfielder Natalie DiPaolo (Baltimore, MD/Perry Hall); freshman forwards Katelyn Manocheh (Baldwin, MD/Maryvale) and Jennifer Sauers (Baltimore, MD/Perry Hall) should all make an immediate impact on the success of the 2007 squad.
The team acquired two tremendous freshman goalkeepers in
freshman Kara Zimmerman (Odenton, MD/Arundel), who
earned 1st team All- Anne Arundel County honors, and
freshman Victoria Wolfe (Parkville, MD/Perry
Hall). The two will battle it out for the starting slot on
the team.
Last year the Mustangs went 5-15 overall and 1-5 in the CAC.
Coach Railey and the Mustangs open up the season by hosting the
Black-Eyed Susan Tournament September 1 to September 2.
