Field Hockey Falls Short in Season Opener, 5-4

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson University field hockey team gave 2007 North Coast Athletic Conference semifinalist Wittenberg all it could handle before Darcey Caciano scored with 6:11 remaining to lift the Tigers to a 5-4 victory Saturday in the sixth annual Black Eyed Susan Tournament at Stevenson's Caves Complex.

Wittenberg (1-0), who finished with 12 wins last season, falling in the North Coast Athletic Conference championship game, was led by the duo of Tori Casanta and Boo Vernon who had a hand in all five of the Tigers' goals, including Vernon's tally at 49:57 that was assisted by Casanta.

The duo finished the game with five points each as Vernon had two goals and one assist while Casanta added one goal and two assists. Last season, they led the team with 39 and 30 points, respectively.

For Stevenson (0-1), senior Cat Connelly (Fallston/Fallston) scored a career-high three points with a goal and an assist, including the team's first of the season just 6:45 into the game to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. She then assisted on a goal by junior Sarah Bauer (Baltimore/Perry Hall) with 10:26 to play to tie the game at 4-4.

Despite being outshot 8-2 in the first half, Stevenson made the most of its two opportunities, forcing a 2-2 halftime tie after senior Krissy Leventis (Baltimore/Lutheran) scored unassisted at 16:39.

Meanwhile, sophomore Kara Zimmerman (Odenton/Arundel) was strong in goal, making four first half saves and holding Wittenberg scoreless for the final 22:21.

Sophomore Katelyn Manocheh (Timonium/Maryvale Prep) scored just over 10 minutes into the second half to give Stevenson its first lead at 3-2, but Vernon tied the game less than five minutes later before Casanta scored unassisted at 59:34 to put the Tigers ahead 4-3.

Wittenberg held a 14-8 edge in shots and a decisive 11-5 margin in penalty corners while Liana Began made all three of her saves in the second half to limit the Mustangs opportunities to preserve the one-goal win.

Stevenson returns to action at home on Sunday when the host local rival Goucher at Noon in the fifth-place game. The Gophers lost to FDU-Florham Saturday, 7-2.
