Bauer's Game-Winner Lifts Field Hockey Past St. Lawrence

GENEVA, N.Y. - Junior Sarah Bauer (Baltimore/Perry Hall) scored the game-winning goal on a penalty corner after time expired in regulation to lift the Mustangs to a 3-2 victory over St. Lawrence Saturday afternoon at the William Smith Invitational on McCooey Field.
It was Bauer's second goal of the game and second game-winning goal of the season as the Mustangs (4-4) won their third game out of the last five. Through eight games this season, Bauer leads the team with eight points on four goals.
The goal was also the second of the game off a penalty corner for Stevenson with seniors Emily Pullarn (Perry Hall/Perry Hall) and Cat Connelly (Fallston/Fallston) picking up their second assists.
The win was the fourth of the season for the Mustangs who had just five in 18 games a year ago and five in 20 games in 2006.
Stevenson led for the majority of the game, forcing the Saints (2-3), who were ranked at No. 18 in the STX/NFHCA Division III Preseason Poll, to play from behind.
After a scoreless first half, the Mustangs broke the
stalemate in the 51st minute when sophomore Katelyn
Manocheh (Timonium/Maryvale Prep) scored off an assist
from freshman Brittany Martin
(Hampstead/Hereford).
St. Lawrence answered less than two minutes later as Erika
Swits found Brooke Maloney for to tie the game at 1-1.
With just over 10 minutes remaining, the Mustangs struck again when
Bauer, Pullarn and Connelly connected for the first time on a
penalty corner to take a 2-1 advantage.
However, the Saints rallied once again when Swits scored a goal of her own, unassisted with less than six minutes left to tie the game.
With time winding down, St. Lawrence was whistled for a foul in the circle with two seconds remaining, giving Stevenson its 11th penalty corner of the game, all of which came in the second half, and setting the stage for Bauer's game-winner.
Sophomore Kara Zimmerman (Odenton/Arundel) made three saves in the game for the Mustangs while Emilie Lannamann stopped five shots for the Saints.
The William Smith Invitational concludes on Sunday at 2:00 p.m., when Stevenson faces host and 11th-ranked William Smith. The Herons defeated Oberlin 6-1 on Saturday. Fans can watch the game live or via live stats here.
