Sauers Scores in 5-1 Loss at No. 11 William Smith
GENEVA, N.Y. - Kelsey Landahl totaled three goals and one assist to lead No. 11 William Smith to a 5-1 victory over the Stevenson University field hockey team Sunday afternoon at McCooey Field in the final game of the William Smith Invitational.
The game was the third out of the last four for the Mustangs (4-5) against a top-20 team, including Lynchburg who was ranked at No. 18 at the time of the game on September 14 and St. Lawrence who was ranked at No. 18 in the STX/NFHCA Division III Preseason Poll.
The Herons (6-0) scored the game's first goal just 73 seconds into the contest when Landahl tipped home a drive by Janelle Walkley.
Walkley then set up the second score of the afternoon for William Smith, assisting on a goal by Jamie Tucciarone with 19:17 left in the first half. Kaitlyn Hamilton would give the Herons a 3-0 lead less than two minutes later off a penalty corner with Landahl and Katie Mancuso picking up assists.
After halftime, Landahl picked up her second goal, unassisted on a loose ball, 7:43 into the second half to increase the lead to four before adding her third with under 20 minutes to play off a rebound.
Sophomore Jennifer Sauers (Baltimore/Perry Hall) scored the lone goal of the game for Stevenson with less than five minutes remaining in the game to break up William Smith's bid for its third shutout in six games this season.
It was the first goal of the year for Sauers who was the Mustangs' leading scorer a year ago after finishing with six goals and three assists.
Chelsea Snyder posted two saves for the Herons after
replacing Katie DeKraker who picked up her sixth win of the
season despite not facing a shot in the first 64-plus
minutes.
Sophomore Kara Zimmerman (Odenton/Arundel) made a
season-high 13 saves for Stevenson, three shy of her career-high,
before giving way to sophomore Victoria Wolfe
(Baltimore/Perry Hall) in the 55th minute.
William Smith held a 22-6 advantage in shots, including a 9-1 edge in a decision first half, and a 9-2 margin in penalty corners.
After six consecutive non-conference contests, the Mustangs return to CAC play on Thursday when they host York (Pa.) at the Caves Complex beginning at 4:30 p.m.
