OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson field hockey sophomore Melissa Doering (Street, Md./North Harford) scored two goals, including the game-winner with less than eight minutes remaining as the Mustangs posted a 2-1 victory over Washington (Md.) Tuesday in their home opener at Mustang Stadium.
This marks the fifth-straight season that Stevenson (2-1) has started a season with at least two wins its first three games. The team has also won back-to-back games at home dating back to last season.
Doering's two goals were the first two of her career after she finished with one assist in 13 games as a freshman last season. Her first tally came with 6:21 remaining in the first half off an assist from junior Caitlin Dempsey (Fallston, Md./Fallston) to tie the game at 1-1.
Kate Duggan scored unassisted less than 15 minutes in to give the Shorewomen (0-2) the early advantage.
Both teams were evenly matched as the Mustangs held a slim 11-10 edge in shots while Washington led 12-11 in penalty corners. Both goalies, sophomore Katie Cavanaugh (Parkville, Md./Perry Hall) and the Shorewomen's Stephanie Harryman, each made five saves.
However, Doering managed to find the back of the net on the second-to-last shot of the game with just 7:27 to play after she redirected a feed from junior Ariella Hopp (Jarrettsville, Md./Institute of Notre Dame).
For Hopp, it was her first point of the season and the ninth assist of her career.
Stevenson begins a three-game road trip on Saturday when it travels to Shenandoah for a 2:00 p.m., contest with the Hornets. Shenandoah won last year's meeting at Mustang Stadium, 2-0 on Sept. 15, 2012.
