CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Led by goals from juniors Caitlin Dempsey (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and Ariella Hopp (Jarrettsville, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) and sophomore Melissa Doering (Street, Md./North Harford), the Stevenson field hockey team defeated Wilson, 3-0 as the Mustangs are off to the best start in program history.
Stevenson (5-1) has posted three straight shutouts and four consecutive wins while outscoring their oppoenents, 14-4.
Sophomore Katie Cavanaugh (Parkville, Md./Perry Hall), who was named Commonwealth Conference Defender of the Week on Monday, extended her scoreless streak to 195:49 and her record to 4-0, with three shutouts, this season after getting the start and playing the entire first half. She gave way to freshman Gabriella Brooks (Bel Air, Md./Patterson Mill) who made five second-half saves.
Dempsey began the scoring with her fourth career game winner just 6:17 before halftime when she scored on an assist from junior Brooke Few (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll). Dempsey leads the team with 12 points this season on five goals and two assists.
Doering, who is tied for second on the team with six points, pushed the Mustangs lead to 2-0 just 2:46 before the half.
Stevenson added a late second half goal when Hopp netted her first goal of the season on an assist from junior Alison Kagel (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township).
Gina Weigold led the Phoenix (1-5) with four saves.
Stevenson returns to action on Tuesday, September 17 when they host local rival McDaniel at Mustang Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m.
