READING, Pa. - With just 34 seconds remaining in the second half, Stevenson field hockey junior Caitlin Dempsey (Fallston, Md./Fallston) scored her sixth career game-winning goal to lift the visiting Mustangs over Albright, 2-1 Saturday at Shirk Stadium.
With the win, the Mustangs (10-9, 4-4 MAC) tied the school record for wins in a season with 10. The 2008 team finished with a 10-10 record.
Senior Alison Kagel (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) scored her tenth goal of the season on an assist from sophomore Rebecca Moreland (Parkville, Md./Mercy) to give Stevenson an early 1-0 lead.
The Lions (6-11, 2-5 MAC) tied the game 13:29 into the second half on a goal from team leading scorer Amanda Smith.
Dempsey scored her 17th goal of the season and 25th of her career to ensure Stevenson a playoff spot and eliminate Albright from contention.
The Mustangs outshot the Lions 22-13, including 12-4 in the first half, while Albright held a 7-6 advantage in penalty corners.
Sophomore Katie Cavanaugh (Parkville, Md./Perry Hall) earned her fifth win of the season, totaling four first half saves. Albright's Marguerite DeLucas finished with 10.
Stevenson, who is currently in fifth-place in the conference standings, will await the results of the Lebanon Valley versus Elizabethtown and Alvernia versus Widener contests. With a Lebanon Valley loss and Alvernia win, the Mustangs will move up to the fourth seed and host Alvernia at home on Monday, November 4. With any other result, the Mustangs will remain the fifth-seed and travel to the Lebanon Valley.
