Sophomore Group Leads Mustangs to 3-0 Victory Over Wilson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Five different sophomore recorded a point as the Stevenson field hockey team posted a 3-0 non-conference victory over Wilson in the Mustangs home finale Tuesday evening at Mustang Stadium.

The Mustangs (5-10) posted their second shutout in the last three games and have outscored their opponents 11-2 during that stretch. The team is 3-2 in their last five games after going 2-8 in their first 10.

It took just 3:39 for the hosts to get on the board as sophomore Marissa Hoffman was able to beat the defender following a penalty corner by classmate Ashley Meyer. Fellow sophomore Katelyn Byram was also credited with an assists.

It is the second goal of the season for Hoffman while Meyer and Hoffman picked up their fourth and first assist, respectively.

Sophomore Sara McVey scored her sixth goal of the year as she carried the ball into the circle and blasted a running shot to the back of the net.

McVey then picked up her sixth assist of the year as classmate Alexis Young kept pace with McVey with the team lead of six goals. Young was able to tip a shot from McVey to make it 3-0 for the hosts at the half.

McVey has tallied a point in six of her last eight games while Young tallied a point in her eighth game this season. The sophomore class has combined for 50 points this season.

Freshman Kelsey Eure totaled three saves before classmate Hope Nyarady took over for the final 9:25. The Phoenix (7-8) were led by goalkeeper Kayla Butts who tallied 16 saves.

The Mustangs outshot Wilson, 16-1, while also holding a 19-3 edge in penalty corners.

Stevenson concludes the 2016 season on Thursday, October 27 when the Mustangs travel to Lebanon Valley for a MAC Commonwealth contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
