Mustangs Fall to Albright in Overtime on Senior Day

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson field hockey team fought back from an early first half deficit but the Mustangs fell short as Albright scored with 1:59 remaining in overtime to lift the visiting Lions to a 2-1 overtime MAC Commonwealth victory Saturday afternoon at Mustang Stadium.

  • Ten minutes into the game, senior Sara McVey fired a shot from just inside the circle that goalkeeper Brynne Schoppe kicked away. Sophomore Brooke Morris had a rebound attempt but her shot hit off the left post.
  • McVey fired a shot in close that got past Schoppe but Mia Moshang came up with a defensive save. On the ensuing penalty corner, junior Jordan Hershberger try to loft a shot over Schoppe but she was able to knock it down.
  • The Lions (7-9, 2-4 MAC Commonwealth) got on the board first as Jennifer Crumling was able to slide the ball across the front of the goal to Kaley Donmoyer who tapped it in for the score at the 16:26 mark.

  • Just 30 seconds into the game, Morris fired a shot after carrying it inside the circle but Schoppe came up with another kick save.
  • McVey tied the game at 1-1 with her 14th goal of the season after carrying it down the right side and sweeping a shot into the back of the net.
  • Off a Mustang penalty corner, Moshang came up with her second defensive save of the game. On the ensuing penalty corner, Stevenson earned a penalty stroke with 25:04 remaining. Freshman Gracyn Colborn, who converted her first penalty stroke earlier this season, missed the stroke attempt as Schoppe knocked it away.
  • The Mustangs (6-10, 2-4 MAC Commonwealth) took a 2-1 lead with 20:12 remaining as senior Marissa Hoffman fired home her third goal of the season on assists from classmates Alexis Young and Ashley Meyer off a penalty corner.
  • Just 2:31 later, Albright tied the game at 2-2 as Donmoyer carried the ball up the right side and sent a pass across the face of the goal to Crumling who tapped it in.
  • Late in regulation, Moshang recorded her third defensive save of the game to keep the game tied.

  • McVey nearly netted the game winner, 3:40 into the overtime period but her shot hit outside the side of the cage.
  • Schoppe came up with back-to-back saves midway through the period, making a pair of kick saves.
  • With 1:59 remaining, the Lions earned a penalty stroke and Marley Berger converted it for the game-winner.

  • Stevenson outshot Albright, 27-8, including 18-3 in the second half. The Mustangs also held a 14-10 edge in penalty corners, including 12-4 in the second half.
  • Schoppe finished with 16 saves, including 12 in the second half and two in the overtime period.
  • With the win, the Lions have won three straight in the series, including back-to-back overtime wins.

  • Stevenson concludes the regular season on Wednesday, October 24 when the Mustangs travel to Lebanon Valley beginning at 7:00 p.m.
