Mustangs Defeat the Purchase Panthers 98-68
The Mustangs hosted the SUNY-Purchase Panthers in their last regular season game.
Before the game Coach Adams honored the five seniors on the team. Cilk McSweeney (Ft. Lauderdale, MD/ Dillard), a senior transfer; Steven Segears (Lanham, MD/ St. Johns College HS), a two-year captain; Vincent Rigatuso (Lansdowne, MD / Lansdowne), a senior captain; Chris Warren (Largo, MD / Bishop McNamara), a two-year captain; and Phil Williams (District Heights, MD / Bishop McNamara), a two year captain. After being presented with a Villa Julie watch, the five seniors started the game for the Mustangs to go on to win 98-68 and make them the #1 seed in the NEAC.
Early in the first half the lead was exchanged multiple times. At 16:57, Phil Williams hit a pair of free-throws to make the score 7-6, and the Mustang held onto the lead for the next seven minutes. At 15:05 Vincent Rigatuso hit a layup and then caused a Panthers turnover. Cilk McSweeney followed with a layup off of the Rigatuso steal to make the score 13-8.
The Panthers fought back and took the lead, 20-19, at 9:29. The Mustangs regained the lead, 23-22, at 8:42 when Mcsweeney stole the ball from SUNY's Warren Walters and Williams took it in and made the jump-shot. From there on out, Villa controlled the ball for the rest of the half. The Mustangs went up by as many as 15 points when Chaise Lancaster (Bowie, MD / Northwestern) hit a three-pointer at 2:26 to make the score 45-30. Dwayne Allen (Baltimore , MD / St. Frances Academy ) sunk a jumper with 46 seconds on the clock which ended the half with the Mustangs up 52-36.
McSweeney started up the second half for the
Mustangs with a three-pointer at 18:38. After that he went
onto slam three dunks. The first was assisted by
Segears, the second was after he stole the ball
from SUNY's Chris Evangelista, and the last was at 8:38 off of a
rebound by Segears to put the Mustangs ahead
86-54. Villa went up by as many as 34 points when
Vincent Johnson (Baltimore , MD / Southern) made a
layup at 5:51 to make the score 92-58. Freshman
Vaughn Hewes sunk a three-pointer with 2:17 left
on the clock to make the score 96-66. Anatoly
Smolkin (Kiev , Ukraine / Pikesville ) ended the game for
the Mustangs hitting a layup with 1:21 left on the clock.
Top scorers for the Mustangs were McSweeney with
24 points, Williams and Segears
both added 15 points, and Warren made 10 points
for the day. The victory ends the regular season for the
Mustangs with a 12 game winning streak which makes their record
17-7 overall and 14-2 in the NEAC.
The Mustangs will host Philadelphia Bible in the semifinals of the NEAC tournament on Tuesday at 8:00 pm.
