Mustangs Compete in Grand Canyon Tournament
Phoenix, AZ-- On Dec. 27, the Mustangs traveled across the states to compete in the Grand Canyon Tournament against the Lewis and Clark University Pioneers from Portland, Ore. and the Falcons of University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
The team faced its first opponent, Lewis and Clark University (7-2), on Dec. 28. The Pioneers opened the game with a 12-0 run, but were stopped when Mike Turner (Baltimore, MD/Polytechnic) hit a jumper to put the Mustangs' first points on the board at 13:39. Villa Julie's men continued their attempt to chip away at the Pioneers' lead throughout the half, but went into halftime down by 29 points at 49-20.
Maintaining control in the second half, the Pioneers went on to finish the game with the win at 111-59. Top scorers for the Mustangs were Greg Collins (Baltimore, MD/Western Tech.) with 10 points and Turner and Justin Miles (Baltimore, MD/Frederick Douglas) each with 9 points. Leading the team's rebounding effort were Jeremy Bernard (Baltimore, MD/ Western Tech.) with eight and Miles with six.
On Dec. 30, the Mustangs contested their second Grand Canyon Tournament opponents in hopes of returning home with a win. Greg Woody (Baltimore, MD/ Mt. St. Joseph) opened the game's scoring with a three-pointer, assisted by Chaise Lancaster (Bowie, MD/ Northwestern). The score remained close for much of the period, but a 10-0 run from the Falcons left the Mustangs trialing behind nine points with just over 11 minutes left in the half. The Mustangs fought hard to stay in the game and return to their place as leaders on the scoreboard, but the Falcons ended the half on top at 54-31.
During the second period, the Mustangs continued to struggle, while the Falcons pulled away to end the game 99-65. Lancaster led the Mustangs with 18 points, followed by Ely Richardson (Hartford, CT/ Suffield Academy) with 11. Bernard led the team in rebounding with a total of eight.
The Mustangs return home to kick off the 10th Annual Legg Mason Winter Classic with a game against PSU Berks on Jan. 6 at 6 p.m. University of Dallas will be playing against NC Wesleyan at 8 p.m.
