Villa Falls In Championship Game

Stevenson, MD-Villa Julie men's basketball faced the University of Dallas Crusaders (7-5) in a close game, as they looked to secure the number one spot of the10th Annual Legg Mason Winter Classic.

Dallas was first to score in the championship game. But teamwork kept the Mustangs within a few points of their competition for much of the first half. With six minutes left in the period, a three-pointer from Greg Woody (Baltimore, MD/ Mt. St. Joseph) with an assist from Chaise Lancaster (Bowie, MD/ Northwestern) gave the Mustangs a one-point lead over Dallas at 21-20. The Mustangs were able to hold onto their lead until halftime, ending the first twenty minutes up by three at 37-34.

Both teams returned after halftime eager to seal the victory, and the lead was tossed back and forth between the two competitors until the final seconds. At 8:58, a jump shot from Mike Turner (Baltimore, MD/ Polytechnic) tied the game at 48-48. After a three-pointer from Woody with three minutes left to score, the Mustangs gained a four-point lead, but the Crusaders soon answered and turned the score back in their favor. In the end, Dallas claimed a 74-69 win and placed first in the tournament, while the Mustangs placed second, bringing the team's overall record to 3-10.

Woody led the Mustangs' effort with 23 points, and Lancaster added 10 to the team's score. Justin Miles (Baltimore, MD/ Douglas) totaled nine points and six rebounds, while Anatoly Smolkin (Baltimore, MD/ Pikesville) crashed the boards to lead the team with eight rebounds.

The Mustangs play their next game at home in a Capital Athletic Conference contest against Marymount University (7-4, 2-1) on Dec. 12 at 4 p.m.
