Mustangs Honor Seniors and Head To CAC Tournament
Stevenson, MD - The Mustangs honored senior athlete and team co-captain, Vincent "Cory" Johnson (Baltimore, MD/ Southern) before the start of their last regular season contest against Capital Athletic Conference challenger University of Mary Washington (16-8, 11-5).
Coach Brett Adams celebrated Cory's achievements in his two-year Villa Julie career, thanking him for bringing leadership and maturity to the team. The team's senior managers Siobhan Palmer (bottom left) and Amanda Wilson (bottom right) were also recognized for their dedication to helping the basketball program over the past seasons.
After the Senior Day ceremony ended, the men got serious and readied themselves for the task at hand: defeat the Mary Washington Eagles. The game opened with a layup from the visitors, but the Mustangs' Greg Collins (Baltimore, MD/ Western Tech.) tied the score 2-2 before a minute ran off the clock. The Eagles then went on a 9-0 run, giving them the upper hand.
The Mustangs attempted to catch up, but hovered around a 10-point deficit for much of the half. The men were determined not to be defeated, bringing the score to 25-20 with a jumper from Greg Woody (Baltimore, MD/ Mt. St. Joseph) at 3:38. Despite the Mu stangs' efforts, the Eagles managed to take a seven-point lead into halftime at 33-26.
After strong play from both teams, either squad could have taken the game during the final 20 minutes. The Eagles added points to their score first, but the Mustangs weren't far behind. At 16:39, two points from Ely Richardson (Hartford, CT/ Suffield Academy) took the score to 44-31. The Mustangs continued their fight to victory, and came within seven points of a tie thanks to a layup from Collins at 13:58.
It was a physical contest, and tough defense made it hard for both teams to score. At 8:11, a free throw from Chaise Lancaster (Bowie, MD/ Northwestern) made it a 10-point game at 58-48, and the Mustangs continued to battle on offense. Time, however, was a big factor, and the Mustangs were forced to concede to a 75-62 loss, bringing their record to 7-18 overall and 5-11 in the CAC.
The Mustangs were led by Woody with 21 points, Lancaster with 14 points, Collins with 10 points and Jeremy Bernard (Baltimore, MD/ Western Tech.) with 13 rebounds.
Villa Julie will return to the glass when they
travel to face Mary Washington in the CAC
Quarterfinals at 8:00 pm on Tuesday 26th February.
