Mustangs Lose Heartbreaker In OT
Fredericksburg, VA - The Villa Julie men's basketball team nearly eliminated the University of Mary Washington Eagles (17-8, 11-5) in the Capital Athletic Conference quarterfinals, taking the game into overtime against the conference's 2nd place team.
After falling 75-62 to UMW at home in their last regular season game on Saturday, the Mustangs stepped it up against CAC rival once again in the first round of the conference playoffs, conceding to a three-point defeat at 74-71.
The Mustangs started off strong with the game-opening points after Jeremy Bernard (Baltimore, MD/ Western Tech.) scored two with a layup at 19:09. The Eagles tied the score at 2-2, but the Mustangs proceeded to take the lead and hold onto it for the remainder of the half.
At 14:06, a layup from Chaise Lancaster (Bowie, MD/ Northwestern) brought the score to 12-8, and at 11:05, the Mustangs' lead was pushed to eight when Anatoly Smoklin (Baltimore, MD/ Pikesville) hit a layup and brought the score to 20-12.
Midway through the half, the Mustangs were up by nine thanks to a 3-pointer from Ely Richardson (Hartford, CT/ Suffield Academy), which made the score 23-14. Great teamwork helped Villa Julie's men dominate the floor, and with a final jumper from Vincent Johnson (Baltimore, MD/ Southern) at the buzzer, the Mustangs went into halftime with a 10-point lead at 43-33.
When the teams stepped back onto the court, they were both ready to claim victory, but UMW was first to score. The Eagles tied with the Mustangs 47-47 with 13:26 left on the clock. Villa Julie then fell behind until a 3-pointer from Andy Shelley (York, PA/ West York) tied the game again at 54-54. A score of 63-63 at the end of the second half sent the game into overtime.
During the bonus round, the teams were tied at 69-69 with 55 seconds left to play, and it was still anyone's game. But four consecutive points from the Eagles brought the score to 73-69 with 13 seconds on the clock. Greg Woody (Baltimore, MD/ Mt. St. Joseph) managed a layup, making it a two-point game, but UMW sank one final free throw with seven seconds left to score, ending the game 74-71.
Leading the team in scoring were Woody and Richardson, Woody with 15 points and Richardson with 12. Greg Collins (Baltimore, MD/ Western Tech.) and Johnson ended the game with a total of nine points each, while Bernard managed eight points and led the team in rebounding with nine.
The Mustangs finished the season with an overall record of 7-19
and a conference record of 5-11. After upsetting CAC number one
York, number eight Salisbury will travel to St. Mary's for the
conference semifinals on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. and Marymount
advances to face CAC number two Mary Washington at 8 p.m.
