Mustangs Drop Second-Straight to Division I, Lose at VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. - Seven players scored in double figures for VMI as the Keydets scored 100 points for the third time in four games this season with a 133-72 victory over the Stevenson University men's basketball team Thursday night at Cameron Hall.
The 61-point margin of victory was the second-largest in VMI (3-1) history as the team is off to its best start since the 2004-05 season.
Meanwhile, the loss was the second in as many games this season for Stevenson (0-2), both of which have come on the road at Division I opponents. Last Saturday, the Mustangs fell at UMBC, 91-54.
The Keydets were led by Chavis Holmes who had a game-high 21 points along with nine rebounds, five steals, four assists and four blocks in just 21 minutes. Austin Kenon had a similar line, totaling 18 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals in 26 minutes.
VMI, who led Division I in scoring and three-pointers for the last two seasons, is averaging 115 points this season and opened the year with a 111-103 victory over Kentucky in Rupp Arena.
The Keydets scored the game's first 18 points over a span of 4:06 and led 32-5 with 11:42 to play in the first half. They hit six of their first nine three-point attempts while the Mustangs started 3-of-17 from the floor.
VMI led by as many as 36 points in the first half as scored 30 of its 73 points off turnovers.
The Keydets reached 100 points with 11:24 remaining in the game on a layup by Willie Bell.
The two teams combined for 59 three-point attempts which was just two short of the Cameron Hall record set in 2006.
Senior Greg Woody (Baltimore/Mount Saint Joseph) scored a team-high 12 points, six of which came from the free throw line where he went 6-of-6 while senior Kerry Dugan (Sparks/Hereford) had nine points and 11 rebounds along with three assists.
Sophomore Greg Collins (Baltimore/Western Tech) finished with 10 points.
Stevenson will face its first divisional opponent on Saturday when it travels to Catholic. Game time is at 7:00 p.m.
