Mustangs Suffer First Loss of the Season, Fall to Hood in Commonwealth Opener
OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's basketball junior Alfonzo Hawkins (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City) scored a season-high 17 points, but the Mustangs shot just 34.4 percent in the second half as Hood outscored them by 13 en route to an 80-66 victory Wednesday at Owings Mills Gymnasium in the Commonwealth Conference opener for both teams.
Stevenson (3-1, 0-1 MAC) was looking for the best start to a season in school history as no team had ever started a season with four-straight wins.
Hawkins led three players in double figures, scoring nine points from three-point range where he was 3-for-5. Senior Brett Burrier (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) totaled 11 points and seven rebounds while junior Stefon McCray (Milton, Fla./Archbishop Curley) had 11 points and five rebounds.
The first half featured five ties and six lead changes before a lay-up by the Blazers' Justin Stone put them ahead by one at the half, 35-34. Both teams shot 50 percent from the floor in the opening half as the Mustangs were 16-for-32 while Hood was 14-for-25 for 56.0 percent.
The Blazers (4-1, 1-0 MAC) opened the second half on a 15-1 run to take a 50-35 lead with 16:25 remaining. They followed up with a 14-4 run over the next 6:47 to take its largest lead of the game, 64-40 with 9:38 to play.
Hood outscored Stevenson 45-32 in the half after the Mustangs were 11-for-32 from the floor. The Blazers scored 20 of their 45 points in the paint and held a 25-17 edge in rebounds. They also scored 14 points on the fast break.
Cameron Cook totaled 17 of his 24 points in the second half where he was 6-for-9 from the field, including 3-for-5 from three-point range. Meanwhile, Trey Quinn scored 13 of his 15 points in the half.
Hood's starters totaled 68 of the team's 80 points and 28 of the team's 41 rebounds.
Freshman Christian Roberts (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) added nine points for Stevenson who lost at home for the first time since a 75-67 defeat to Hood on Feb. 4, 2012, snapping a four-game winning streak.
The Mustangs conclude their five-game homestand to open the 2012-13 season on Saturday when the host a Commonwealth Conference contest versus Arcadia beginning at 4:00 p.m.
