Second Half Carries Mustangs to 90-79 Home Victory Versus Skidmore

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Led by six points each from Stevenson men's basketball junior Alphonzo Hawkins (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City) and freshman Christian Roberts (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch), the Mustangs rallied from a seven-point second half deficit with an 18-5 run en route to a 90-79 non-conference victory over Skidmore Saturday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

The win snapped a three-game home losing streak for Stevenson (6-4) who has already matched its win total from a year ago just 10 games into the season. The win also came against a team that advanced to the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship last year after winning the Liberty League.

As a team, the Mustangs scored 90 points in consecutive games for the first time since Feb. 24, 2007.

Despite allowing 15 three-pointers and being out-rebounded by 11, Stevenson shot 62.5 percent from the floor and scored 36 points off of 27 Thoroughbred turnovers. The Mustangs also 48 points in the paint and scored 20 on the fast break.

Skidmore (6-3), who lost for just the second time in the last eight games, held a 48-44 halftime lead after shooting 70.8 percent from the field in the first half, including 8-of-10 from three-point range. Aldin Medunjanin totaled 20 points on 7-of-7 shooting from the floor where he was also a perfect 5-of-5 from behind the arc.

However, Stevenson held Skidmore to just 31 points and 36.4 percent shooting in the second half as the Thoroughbreds were just 7-of-21 from three-point range. Medunjanin scored just three points in the half on 1-of-5 shooting.

Roberts scored 14 of his team-high 19 points in the second half while Hawkins added 11. Freshman Tyrus Costly (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances) had 10 second-half points and finished the game with a career-high 18.
