Mustangs Post Highest Win Total Since 2007-08, Down Norwich at Home, 81-60
OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's basketball junior Alfonzo Hawkins (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City) led four Mustangs in double figures with a game-high 17 points as the Mustangs posted an 81-60 non-conference victory over Norwich Thursday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
Stevenson (7-4) won its seventh game of the season, its highest single-season win total since the 2007-08 season when the team went 7-19. The team also extended its winning streak to a season-high three.
The Mustangs also remained unbeaten against non-conference opponents this season, improving its record to 6-0. The previous school record for non-conference wins in a season was five, set in 2005-06 and 2006-07.
Stevenson went on a 19-3 run in the first half, holding the Cadets without a field goal for 8:25 while establishing its largest lead of the game at 36-11 with 5:31 remaining.
Norwich (3-6) responded with an 11-5 run, capped by Josh Cabrera's buzzer-beating three-pointer from just over half court, to cut its deficit to 18 at the half, 43-25.
The Cadets pulled within 10 points with 9:01 left in the second half on a jumper by Cabrera, but the Mustangs pushed their lead to 22 following a 16-4 run jump started by three consecutive layups from Hawkins.
Stevenson held a 28-12 advantage in points off turnovers, forcing at least 20 turnovers for the fourth consecutive game and seventh this year. The Mustangs are 6-0 this season when forcing its opponent into 21 or more turnovers compared to 7-13 over the previous four.
Freshman Christian Roberts (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) scored 15 points while junior Stefon McCray (Milton, Fla./Archbishop Curley) had 11 and senior Brett Burrier (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) added 10. McCray also had a game-high nine rebounds.
Cabrera led Norwich with 15 points and eight rebounds while Evan Tullar had 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Stevenson returns to Commonwealth Conference play on Saturday when it travels to Lebanon Valley. Tip-off is at 1:00 p.m.
