Stefon McCray, Brett Burrier Lead Mustangs to 66-64 Overtime Victory at Hood

FREDERICK, Md. - Stevenson men's basketball junior Stefon McCray (Milton, Fla./Archbishop Spalding) totaled 20 points and 12 rebounds while senior Brett Burrier (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) had 18 points and 10 rebounds as the Mustangs posted a 66-64 Commonwealth Conference overtime victory over Hood Wednesday at BB&T Arena.

The win snapped a five-game losing streak for Stevenson (10-7, 4-7 MAC) against the Blazers and was their first on the road in the series since Jan. 14, 2006. It was also the Mustangs' 10th win of the season, the program's first season with double digit wins since 2006-07.

McCray totaled his first double double of the season and the third of his career. It was his first since Dec. 21, 2011 when he had 12 points and 10 rebounds in an 81-74 overtime victory versus Nichols in the Daytona Beach Shootout. That game was also the last time two players registered double doubles in the same game for Stevenson as Greg Collins added 23 points and 12 rebounds.

McCray also scored at least 20 points for the second time this season and for the fourth time in his career. He had a career-high 26 points in a 71-68 loss to Arcadia at home on December 1.

For Burrier, he totaled his first double double of the season and the fifth of his career. It was his first since Nov. 31, 2011 when he had 13 points and 11 rebounds in a 63-53 loss versus Mary Washington at home.

Burrier now has 967 points in 84 career games, including 920 in 62 games at Stevenson. He is currently eighth on the school's career scoring list behind Mike Kastanakis who had 1,056 career points in 98 games from 2000-04.

Burrier is also ranked seventh in school history with 374 career rebounds, 15 behind Greg Collins who had 389 from 2007-12.

The Mustangs trailed by five, 57-52 with 1:20 remaining in the second half, but forced overtime on a lay-up by McCray with six seconds left after Hood's Terell Buyck missed the second of two free throw attempts with 22 seconds to play.

Stevenson led by as many as four in overtime before the Blazers cut their deficit to one with five seconds remaining. Burrier hit the second of two free throw attempts with four seconds left and Justin Bowens three-pointer with one second to play was off the mark, evening the Mustangs' overtime record to 2-2 in two seasons under head coach Gary Stewart.

Junior Alfonzo Hawkins (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City) totaled 12 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Freshman Christian Roberts (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch), the team's leading scorer entering Wednesday's game, was held scoreless for the first time in his career, but did total a career-high five assists.

Cameron Cook led Hood (10-8, 4-7 MAC) with 11 points, nine rebounds and four blocks while Bowens added 11 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Stevenson hosts conference-leading Alvernia on Saturday at Owings Mills Gymnasium beginning at 4:00 p.m. The Crusaders enter the game with a 9-2 Commonwealth Conference record with one of those two losses coming versus Stevenson at home on December 5, 75-66.
