OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Four Division III men's basketball teams from throughout the region descend on Stevenson University's Owings Mills Gymnasium on December 29-30 for the Buffalo Wild Wings Classic. In Friday's first round, Merchant Marine faces Penn State Abington at 6 pm, with the host Mustangs facing Medgar Evers at 8.
On Saturday, the tournament's consolation game kicks things off at 2 pm, with the championship game set for 4 pm.
Stevenson has nearly doubled its win total from last season already, as it has gotten off to a 7-4 start, including an eye-opening conferene win against Lebanon Valley on December 6. Senior Danzel Wright is averaging 23.0 points per game, good for 19th nationally, while junior Jaylin Johnson is adding 13.3 points per contest. The Mustangs are 3-1 at Owings Mills Gymnasium this season.
Medgar Evers, under first-year head coach Brian Nigro, has been idle since December 8 when it dropped a CUNYAC contest to York (N.Y.). The Cougars do have a win over NYU on their resume. Maurice Swaby II leads three players averaging double figures with 19.6 points per game, while Justin Sutton (18.5) and Basheeru Camara (13.0) also ran among the team's leaders. Camara is shooting 54% from the floor.
Merchant Marine also has a first-year head coach in Rob Pryor. The Mariners are 4-3 thus far and have played three overtime games. A balanced USMMA squad has five players averaging double figures in the scoring column, led by senior guard George Hatzioannides and his 16.3 ppg average. The Mariners have been idle since a 70-65 OT loss to Yeshiva on December 14.
Penn State Abington is off to a 1-2 start in conference play and a 2-6 overall record. The Nittany Lions also feature five players in double figures, with Terrance Reese leading the way at 14.5 ppg. Penn State Abington is averaging just over 84 points per game.
