Scranton Pulls Away From Mustangs Late

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Visiting Scranton pulled away late for an 86-65 victory over Stevenson in non-conference men's basketball Saturday afternoon at Owings Mills Gymnasium.  The game was the season opener for both schools.

  • Stevenson (0-1) built a 15-8 lead over the first seven minutes of the game following a conventional three-point play by Marlon White, Jr.
  • Scranton (1-0) used a 10-4 run to pull within one, 19-18, at the 8:45 mark on a pair of free throws by Jackson Danzig.
  • An 8-0 run by the Royals put the visitors up 28-22 at the 5:57 mark.
  • The Mustangs chipped away and a basket by Walt English 1:31 before halftime pulled Stevenson within one, 30-29.
  • Sophomore Evan Joseph sank a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left in the half and went into the locker room down a pair, 33-31.

  • Scranton started the second half on a 9-3 run and opened a 42-34 lead following a Danzig layup.
  • A basket by White cut Scranton's lead to five, 44-39, at the 16:21 mark.
  • A three by Nolan Genasevich extended the Royal lead to 10, 51-41, with 14:34 left.
  • Stevenson countered with a 7-0 spurt over the next 57 seconds capped by a three by senior Montaque Wright pulled the Mustangs within three, 51-48.
  • Eight straight points by the guests pushed their lead back to 11, 59-48, at the 11:05 mark.
  • Scranton started to pull away, and a 17-3 run capped by a pair of Danzig free throws with 4:14 remaining made it a 77-53 game.

  • Scranton shot 46.7% from the floor and made seven of its 19 three-point attempts (36.8%).  The Royals also made 20 more trips to the free throw line, going 23-32, while Stevenson was 9-12 at the stripe.
  • Stevenson shot 32% from the floor and from three, going 8-25 behind the arc.
  • The Mustangs held a 17-13 offensive rebounding advantage but the Royals outrebounded the hosts 49-41.
  • Wright finished with 26 points in his Mustang debut, going 6-12 behind the arc.
  • Junior Mark Terrell totaled nine points and five rebounds.
  • English and Sean Mayberry chipped in with six points apiece.
  • Scranton placed all five starters in double figures, led by Matthew Mancuso's 20 points.

  • Stevenson returns to action next Friday when it hosts Clark's Summit in the first round of the Buffalo Wild Wings Classic at 8 pm at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
