Dentley's 29 Leads Mustangs to Big Win Over Widener

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Senior Marcus Dentley poured in a career-high 29 points as the Stevenson University men's basketball team defeated Widener 101-71 in MAC Commonwealth play Saturday afternoon at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

  • Stevenson (12-4, 6-1 MAC Commonwealth) used a 13-2 run capped by a three by Johnny Rhodes to go up 15-6 at the 14:24 mark.
  • A 14-2 run gave the Mustangs their largest lead of the first half, 29-10, on a three by Mikey Parker with 11:11 to go in the first half.
  • Widener (7-8, 4-3 MAC Commonwealth) chipped away and a 10-4 run pulled the Pride within 13, 33-20, at the 8:10 mark.
  • The Mustangs led 38-22 with 5:13 to play before intermission when five straight points by the guests made it 38-27 with 4:23 on the clock.
  • Widener cut the lead to 11 three more times in the stanza, and two free throws by Elijah Boyd with 2.4 seconds to go made it a 44-33 game at the break.

  • Widener outscored Stevenson 17-12 over the first 4:24 of the second half to pull within six, 56-50, on a Connor Laverty basket.
  • The Mustangs scored the game's next 10 points and back-to-back threes by Montaque Wright capped the run to put Stevenson up 66-50 with 13:19 remaining.
  • Stevenson held the Pride without a field goal for nearly eight minutes and upped its lead to 22, 78-56, with 7:49 to go on a basket by Dentley.
  • A Widener three at 7:33 broke the field goal drought and pulled the guests within 19.
  • The Pride got as close as 16 the rest of the way, on a Pat Holden layup with 4:29 left that made it 83-67, but the Mustangs closed the game on an 18-4 run, including scoring the game's final 12 points.
  • A basket by Drew Miller with 22 seconds to go put the Mustangs over the century mark.

  • The Mustangs have their most victories since the 2014-15 campaign.
  • Stevenson scored 100 points for the second time this season and the first time in regulation.  
  • The 30-point margin of victory was Stevenson's largest-ever in a MAC Commonwealth game since joining the conference for the 2012-13 season.  The previous largest victory was an 84-57 win against Albright on February 15, 2014.
  • Dentley finished 10-13 from the floor and 8-8 at the free throw line while grabbing nine rebounds and recording three assists.
  • Mark Terrell totaled 20 points and grabbed six rebounds.
  • Wright knocked down three three-pointers and tallied 19 points while also notching six assists, five rebounds and five steals.  He reached double figures in scoring for the 15th time this season and 12th straight contest.
  • Rhodes added 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while Cam Harris added nine points.
  • Stevenson shot 57.9% in the second half (22-38) and 54.3% for the game while holding Widener to 41.7% shooting.
  • The Mustangs dominated the glass, outrebounding the Pride 44-22, leading to a 19-4 lead in second chance points.

  • Stevenson is on the road Wednesday when it travels to Hood for a 6 pm MAC Commonwealth contest.
  • The Mustangs return home Wednesday, January 23 when they entertain Alvernia in an 8 pm conference tilt at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
