Stevenson to Host 2009 CAC Golf Championship

YORK, Pa. - For the second-straight year, Stevenson University will serve as the host for the CAC Golf Championship at Piney Branch Golf Club in Hampstead. The two-day tournament, which will be in its second year in 2009 will take place this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, April 25-26.
Wesley won the first-ever conference championship in 2008 and went on to gain a bid to the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship where the team placed seventh in the final team standings.
The Wolverines won last year's event with a two-day total of 632, outdistancing host Stevenson by 21 strokes for the title. York (Pa.) placed third, followed by Marymount (Va.) and Hood.
Wesley junior Chris Osberg is the defending individual champion, having carded a two-day total of 154.
However, the Wolverines will have to replace the other five golfers who finished among the top-10 in last year's championship, including Andrew Guyer, who was tragically killed earlier this spring by a suspected drunk driver.
Here is a look at each team heading into this weekend's championship.
HOOD
Sophomore Andy Alger owns Hood's lowest stroke average at 84.6 and also owns the Blazers' lowest round of the season with a 78 against Stevenson at Piney Branch on September 18. Sophomore Evan Chaney was Hood's top finisher in its only competition of the spring, carding an 85 at the Messiah Falcon Classic on Tuesday.
MARYMOUNT (VA)
Marymount is looking to build on its strong finish at the York Spring Invitational going into the conference championship tournament. The Saints finished second out of 10 teams with seniors Kevin Thomsen and Tom Donovan both finishing in a tie for second place. Look for both, along with senior Ryan Fitzmeyer, to lead Marymount this weekend. Thomsen was CAC Athlete of the Week four times this year while Donovan shared the honor once with Thomsen.
STEVENSON
Stevenson finished second a year ago behind Wesley who won its first conference championship. Junior Matt Lukehart (Bel Air/Mt. Carmel) is one of the individual favorites this year after finishing third a year ago and earning All-CAC First Team honors. Senior Kevin Motz (Hagerstown/North Hagerstown) was named to the All-CAC Second Team after placing ninth while senior Cliff Mangle (Westminster/Westminster) looks to improve upon his 16th place finish from a year ago.
WESLEY
Wesley will be seeking its 12th-straight conference championship. The Wolverines won the first-ever CAC title a year ago after claiming 10 consecutive Pennsylvania Athletic Conference titles. Junior Chris Osberg is the defending individual champion and currently leads the CAC in scoring average. Junior Rob Zimmerer, the reigning CAC Player of the Week, and junior Jeff Owsik are coming off season bests at the Bent Creek Invitational on April 13. Wesley ranks second in the conference in team scoring with a 321 average.
YORK (PA)
York enters the CAC championship having won two of its last three tournaments. The Spartans, who finished third last year, bring a talented core of players to this year's championship led by junior Cody Trabert who boasts a 79.2 average. Freshmen Andrew Schmehl and Adam Dupler also average in the 70's as Schmehl is at 79.3 and Dupler owns a 79.8 average. Senior Jimmy DeCastro is at 80.0 while senior Shane Bernard, whio finished sixth a year ago, rounds out the top five with an 80.9 average.
