Mustangs Open the Season With 4-3 Victory Over Morrisville

REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson men's ice hockey sophomore Aaron Murray and junior Dominic Brenza each recorded two points while sophomore Matt Cappucci scored the game-winning goal as the Mustangs posted a season opening 4-3 non-conference victory over Morrisville Saturday afternoon at Reisterstown Sportsplex.

  • Just 1:08 into the game, Morrisville was whistled for a penalty after an interference call. On the third shot of the power play, sophomore Carl Lyden netted the first goal of the year on assists from Brenza and Murray.
  • On the goal, Murray played the pucked to Brenza from the blue line as Brenza was curling towards the center of the ice before finding Lyden on the back post. Lyden's shot hit off the stick of goaltender Jorgen Johnson and into the back of the net.
  • After an icing call against Morrisville, Brenza won the ensuing face-off back to freshman Jarrod Vroman. Vroman fired a shot from the point that was stopped by the stick of Gray before Gray fired a back-hander that beat Johnson near side for a 2-0 lead at the 4:45 mark.
  • Morrisville (0-2) did not record its first shot on net until midway through the period on the penalty kill. The visiting Mustangs had just four shots in the opening frame.

  • The hosts went back to the power play just 3:55 into the period and converted on the man advantage with just four seconds remaining. Murray netted his second career goal on assists from juniors Justin Stelzer and Frank Pinho after entering the offensive zone.
  • The Mustangs (1-0) had a five-on-three for 41 seconds but fired just one shot on net on the two-man advantage. Stevenson then had a power play for 4:19 but totaled just two shots while Morrisville had three.
  • Morrisville then had a five-on-three for 1:24 and scored with 2:15 remaining in the period as CJ Stubbs scored his first of two goals.
  • After a major penalty against the Mustangs, Stubbs added a second goal, also coming on the power play, to cut the visitors deficit to one with 39 seconds left in the period.

  • Morrisville tied the game just 1:55 into the third period as Ryan Bochert scored the visitors goal on the major penalty.
  • After a face-off win by freshman Luke Benitez, Cappucci netted the game-winning goal at the 8:21 mark on assists from sophomore Mark Bowen and freshman Ryan Patrick.
  • Late in regulation, Morrisville tried to pull Johnson in favor for an extra skater but Stevenson kept the puck in the offensive zone, firing a pair of shots on net in the final 24 seconds.

  • Stevenson outshot Morrisville, 21-20, including 12-5 in the third period.
  • The Mustangs finished 2-for-8 on the power play while Morrisville was 3-for-8.
  • Stevenson won 50 of the 88 face-offs with Brenza going 15-for-23 at the dot.
  • With the win, Stevenson improves to 3-0-1 in the all-time series. The two teams tied a season ago while the Mustangs defeated Morrisville in the program's first ever games.
  • Freshman Riley McVeigh finished with 17 saves in his first career game.
  • It is the 12th multi-point game for Brenza in his career while Murray recorded his second.

  • Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, November 3 when the Mustangs host an United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) contest versus Chatham beginning at 3:00 p.m.
