OWINGS MILLS, Md. - For the first time ever, Inside Lacrosse has ranked the Stevenson men's lacrosse team at No. 1 in its preseason Division III rankings as part of its 2013 Face-Off Yearbook. The Mustangs posted an 18-5 record a year ago while advancing to the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship.
Stevenson has been ranked at No. 1 in three of the last four seasons while making four consecutive NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship appearances, including three in the semifinals.
The Mustangs have been ranked in the top-10 of the USILA Division III Coaches' Poll for 50 consecutive weeks and in the top five in 38 of the last 43 polls. The team was ranked as high as No. 4 last season after being ranked at No. 1 each season from 2009-11.
Overall, Stevenson has been ranked in 65 of the last 67 polls dating back to its first-ever ranking at No. 18 on Feb. 26, 2007.
The Mustangs, who finished last year at No. 5 in the final USILA Division III Coaches' Poll, were ranked at No. 2 in the Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook in 2010 and 2011, No. 5 in 2009 and No. 7 in 2012. The team's first appearance came in 2008 when it was No. 20.
Stevenson was ranked ahead of No. 2 and 2012 national runner-up SUNY Cortland and No. 3 and defending national champion Salisbury. The Mustangs and Sea Gulls will continue one of lacrosse's best rivalries on Wednesday, April 3 at Sea Gull Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m.
In addition to Salisbury, Stevenson is scheduled to play five other teams ranked by Inside Lacrosse, including No. 4 Tufts, No. 5 RIT, No. 7 Lynchburg, No. 11 Roanoke and No. 18 Western New England. All five of those games are at Mustang Stadium.
