OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson men's lacrosse team will begin the season ranked at No. 3 in the USILA Division III Coaches Preseason Poll released on Monday. The Mustangs are ranked behind No. 1 and defending national champion Salisbury and No. 2 and national runner-up Cortland.
Stevenson, who was ranked at No. 1 by Inside Lacrosse and No. 2 by Lacrosse Magazine, finished last season at No. 5 in the USILA Division III Coaches Poll after posting an 18-3 record and making its third appearance in the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship in the last four years.
The Mustangs received 310 points and one first-place vote while Cortland received 322 points and four first-place votes. The Sea Gulls totaled 333 points and 12 first-place votes.
In addition to the team's annual rivalry with Salisbury on April 3, Stevenson will play seven opponents mentioned in Monday's poll this season, including six in the top-12 and five of which are at Mustang Stadium.
During a four-game stretch from February 27 to March 9, the Mustangs will host No. 6 RIT, No. 12 Western New England, No. 11 Roanoke and local foe Goucher who was receiving votes in Monday's poll after the Gophers won their second Landmark Conference title a year ago and made their second-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship.
Stevenson will also host No. 4 Tufts on March 19 and No. 9 Lynchburg on March 30 in a game that will be broadcast on Maryland Public Television's MPT2.
The Mustangs begin the 2013 season this Saturday, February 16 versus Nazareth at Mustang Stadium beginning at 6:00 p.m., sponsored by Buffalo Wild Wings.
