OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's lacrosse sophomore Mark Pannenton (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) totaled six points with five goals and one assist to lead the third-ranked Mustangs to a 17-11 victory over Nazareth Saturday at Mustang Stadium.
Stevenson (1-0) improved its record to 9-0 in season openers under head coach Paul Cantabene.
Pannenton, a transfer from Cortland, was one of nine different goal scorers for the Mustangs, including one of four who netted at least two. Senior Peter Green (Hereford, Md./Hereford) finished with a career-high three goals while senior Tyler Reid (Clinton, Conn./Xavier) and junior Glen Tompkins (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) each had two.
Keyed by two goals by Pannenton, Stevenson scored five consecutive goals to break a 4-4 tie midway through the second quarter and take a 9-4 advantage following the second career goal by sophomore Sam Wyatt (Brentwood, Tenn./Human Services) off the face-off with 2:40 remaining.
The Golden Flyers (0-1) would answer with back-to-back goals just six seconds apart in the final 1:01 to pull within three at the half, 9-6.
However, the Mustangs would outscore Nazareth 5-1 in the third period to take a commanding 14-7 lead into the fourth before goals by Green and junior Chris Dashiell (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) stopped a Golden Flyer spurt that saw them pull within four at 15-11.
Stevenson held a 52-37 advantage in shots and got nine saves from freshman Dimitri Pecunes (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall), including five in the fourth quarter.
Troy Haefele led Nazareth with three goals while Trevor Haefele had two goals and two assists. Tim Doyle finished with 12 saves.
The Mustangs return to action next Saturday, February 23 when they travel to Hampden-Sydney for a 1:00 p.m., contest with the Tigers.
