No. 2 Mustangs Overcome Slow Start to Post 17-7 Victory Over Goucher

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Led by six points each from senior Tyler Reid (Clinton, Conn./Xavier) and junior Chris Dashiell (Salisbury, Md./Parkside), the No. 2-ranked Stevenson men's lacrosse team overcame a slow start by outscoring Goucher 15-4 over the final three quarters en route to a 17-7 victory Saturday night at Mustang Stadium.

The Mustangs (5-0) have now won three of the last four meetings in the series that dates back to Apr. 12, 1995. Tonight marked the first meeting between the two teams since Mar. 14, 2007 when Stevenson posted a 13-9 victory at home.

The Mustangs dominated the game statistically, outshooting the Gophers 57-25, winning 20-of-27 face-offs, holding a 51-30 advantage in ground balls and scoring on 3-of-5 man-up opportunities.

However, Stevenson found itself trailing 3-2 at the end of the first quarter. It marked the first time that the team had trailed at the end of the first quarter against a non-ranked opponent since it trailed 1-0 versus Widener a year ago.

Goucher (1-5) held the lead until the 11:24 mark of the second quarter when Dashiell tied the game with a man-up goal that was assisted by sophomore Pat Candon (Long Beach, N.Y./Holy Trinity).

Sophomore Billy Burgoyne (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes) gave the Mustangs a 4-3 lead just 28 seconds later when he scored his fifth goal of the season off a feed from Reid before Bryce Carson tied the game for the first time at 4-4.

Reid gave the Mustangs the lead for good when he scored at 8:06 on an assist from sophomore Michael Crowe (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) that sparked a 3-0 spurt as Stevenson took an 8-5 halftime lead after Dashiell's second goal of the half with just 13 seconds remaining.

The Mustangs outscored the Gophers 5-0 in the third quarter to stretch their lead to eight with Reid scoring twice and Dashiell picking up three assists.

Reid added two more fourth-quarter tallies to finish with a career-high five goals. He also had five goals and six points in a 13-2 victory over Birmingham-Southern in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship.

Meanwhile, Dashiell finished one point shy of his career-high of seven set in a 19-3 win at Wesley on Mar. 28, 2012 when he had two goals and five assists.

Candon totaled four points on two goals and two assists while sophomore Mark Pannenton (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) and senior Nick Rossi (Lutherville, Md./Towson) each had two goals and one assist.

Freshman Dimitri Pecunes (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) had nine saves.

Max Roach had two goals to lead Goucher while Sam Morgan and Owen Demmerly both had one goal and one assist. Connor Mishaw was credited with a career-high 21 saves.

Stevenson opens its first season in the Commonwealth Conference next Saturday, March 16 when it travels to Elizabethtown. Game time is at noon.
