CHESTER, Pa. – No. 12 Stevenson University withstood a fourth quarter rally by host Widener University to pull out a 10-8 MAC Commonwealth men's lacrosse victory at Quick Stadium Saturday afternoon. The win extended Stevenson's (8-3, 5-0 MAC Commonwealth) win streak to five.
With the win, the Mustangs improved to 37-0 all-time in MAC Commonwealth regular season action.
Stevenson held a 9-5 lead entering the final quarter, but Widener (5-6, 2-2 MAC Commonwealth) cut the lead to 9-6 39 seconds into the fourth on a man-up goal by Chris Drake. Drake struck again at the 6:53 mark to make it a 9-7 game, then a Paz Gismondi tally with 1:58 to go cut the Mustang lead to one, 9-8.
Freshman Justin Burnette won the ensuing faceoff, picking up the ground ball, and 48 seconds later Stevenson reclaimed a two-goal advantage as senior Kyle D'Onofrio scored his fourth goal of the game to make it 10-8.
Widener's Anthony Paone won the next faceoff for the Pride, and the hosts went on a man-up opportunity with 59 seconds left on a cross-check. Widener's first shot with 36 seconds to go was saved by senior Ross Dinan, and a successful clear by the Mustangs closed out the contest.
Stevenson clung to a 6-5 lead with 7:53 to go in the third following a Gismondi man-up goal, but the Mustangs responded with a man-up goal of their own at the 7:24 mark by sophomore JT Thelen. Just 23 seconds later, D'Onofrio scored on a feed from junior Kyle Karsian, and a Thelen goal with 1:46 left in the third gave the guests a four-goal cushion heading into the final quarter.
D'Onofrio scored the first two goals of the game at 7:41 and 6:21 of the first, then a Karsian tally with 3:30 left in the frame made it 3-0. Widener scored twice in a 52-second span, with a Mitchell Phillips goal at 2:17 making it 3-2, which would be the score after one.
Senior Morgan Pritchett gave the Mustangs a 4-2 lead with 10:24 left before halftime, but the Pride halved the lead 17 seconds later as Taylor scored. Thelen scored at 6:02, followed by a Brandon Watson goal with 4:02 left before intermission to give Stevenson a 6-3 halftime lead.
D'Onofrio led Stevenson with four goals, while Thelen scored three times. Pritchett and Karsian each finished with a goal and an assist, with Watson recording the other tally. The Mustangs won despite winning just 8-of-21 faceoffs, with Burnette going 7-16 and picking up five ground balls. Senior Tom Brown had two caused turnovers and two ground balls, while Karsian, senior Wade Korvin and junior Dominic DeFazio each picked up three ground balls.
Dinan had seven saves as the Mustangs outshot the Pride 48-32. Widener counterpart Matt Horton turned aside 15 shots. Drake and Gismondi led Widener with two goals apiece.
Stevenson is idle until Thursday, April 13 when it travels to Alvernia University for a 4:00 MAC Commonwealth contest.
