Men's Soccer Season Preview

Owings Mills, MD.- The Mustangs enter their first season in the Capital Athletic Conference with one of the toughest schedules they have seen, both in and out of conference play.  First year coach, John Plevyak looks to have a positive season with 15 returning players who went 11-8 overall and 9-2 in the NEAC in 2006.

The Mustangs began their 2006 campaign with a four-game winning streak, but the road will be much tougher this time around.  They open up their season home game versus PSU-Harrisburg, but then host a very tough NJAC opponent in Rutgers-Camden University.  The next five teams all played in the postseason in 2006. They play the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference favorite, Eastern Eagles, and then turn around the following day and play the PAC 2006 runner-up Alvernia College.  The following Wednesday VJC hosts the 26th ranked (NSCAA.com) Virginia Wesleyan Marlin at home on our Stevenson campus.  Four days later the ‘Stangs once again host a highly ranked foe as the 27th ranked (D3Kicks.com) Christopher Newport Captains come to town to battle the Mustangs.  The Captains are picked to finish second in the powerful USA South Conference.  Arcadia University rounds out Villas three-game home stand on September 22.  Arcadia won the PAC in 2006, winning a first-round game in the NCAA tournament in overtime over Franklin and Marshall, but ultimately falling to eventual National Champion Messiah College 3-0.

Next the Mustangs travel to D.C. to take on the Gallaudet Bison to start the first of three straight Capital Athletic Conference games.  Two days later, VJC plays host to the second ranked (D3Kicks.com) team in the nation, York College.  Villa ends their three-game conference run with a home match versus St. Mary's College.

Coach Plevyak will then play his reunion game at McDaniel College on October 1st at 4pm.  Plevyak was a highly successful coach at McDaniel/Western Maryland over his 13 year tenure at the school in which he compiled a record of 125-113-17.

Villa then gets back into the heart of their conference schedule as they play five games over the next seventeen days: University of Mary Washington (Home), Hood College (Home), Salisbury University (Away), and Marymount University (Away).

The ‘Stangs round out their intense non-conference schedule as they host the 15th ranked North Carolina Wesleyan Battling Bishops on October 21st.
Goalkeeper Eric Lowman (Catonsville, MD/ Catonsville), who is a two-time Goalie of the Year and 1st Team All-Conference, will be returning for his senior year to lead the Mustangs.  Junior Scott Andrzejewski, who was named to the 1st Team All-Conference team two years in a row and was named to the All-South All-American team by d3kicks last year, will be assisting in leading the new Mustangs that will be joining the team this year.

Expecting to make an immediate impact is freshman defender Justin Bean (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) along with freshman midfielder Sean Scarselletta (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park).  Coach Plevyak also expects to see top defensive performances by sophomore Vinny Caltabiano (Lothian, MD/Mt. St. Joe) and junior Ryan Payne (Millersville, MD/Old Mill).
