Men's Soccer Announces 2009 Captains

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson University head men's soccer coach John Plevyak announced on Wednesday that senior Vinny Caltabiano (Lothian/Mount Saint Joseph), junior Sean Scarselletta (Severna Park/Severna Park) and junior Justin Bean (Silver Spring/Paint Branch) have been named captains for the 2009 season.
"The captains were chosen based on their relationship towards the players and coaching staff," said Plevyak. "All three are highly respected, well-liked and leaders on and off the field."
Caltabiano will return as the most experienced player on next year's roster, having played in 54 of the team's 55 games over the last three seasons with 47 starts in the midfield where he has totaled eight points and six assists.
In 2008, Caltabiano made 18 appearances with 13 starts and totaled two assists.
"Vinny has shown since the end of the regular season great leadership by example," said Plevyak. "He is constantly in the weight room, running and working on plyometrics. He has encouraged other team members to join him as well."
Scarselletta has started all 37 of the team's games in the midfield during his first two seasons as a Mustang while totaling four points. Both of his goals came in back-to-back games this season at St. Mary's (Md.) and Mary Washington on September 27 and 30.
"Sean has started every game snce his arrival in the mid-field, obviously a pivotal position on a vey young team," said Plevyak. "His hard work on the field and his kindness to his teammates off the field make him a very popular member of our team."
After starting all 19 of the team's games a year ago on defense, Bean started all 14 games in which he played this season, missing four-straight home games from Setpember 13-20 because of injury.
"Justin just may be our MVP over the past two seasons," said Plevyak. "He was remarkable his freshman year and showed his worth to our team when we lost four of the five games he missed last season. He is a tenacious defender and warrior."
Stevenson is scheduled to open the 2009 season at home on September 1 against Lancaster Bible.
