Strong Second Half Leads Men's Soccer to First Win

READING, Pa. - The Stevenson University men's soccer team scored three second half goals to pick up its first win of the season, 5-1 over Albright on the road Saturday night at Shirk Stadium.

Sophomore Justin Carver (Manchester/North Carroll) totaled four points on two goals, both career-highs, to lead the Mustangs (1-1) who scored five goals on just nine shots, including three on five in the second half.

Carver's goal, which came on a penalty kick in the 19th minute, proved to be the game-winning goal and gave Stevenson a 2-0 lead after freshman Ryan Brost (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley) picked up his first career tally just two minutes earlier.

The Lions (0-1) would cut the Mustang lead in half in the 36th minute when Matt Pennella played the ball through to Dan Martin who crossed it to teammate Brandon Dohanicz for his first career goal.

Neither team would score again until freshman Chris Sokolis (Perry Hall/Perry Hall) got his first collegiate goal as a Mustang in the 57th minute off an assist from sophomore Nick Gault (Baltimore/McDonogh) to push the Stevenson lead back to two.

Just 1:04 later, Carver picked up his second goal that was assisted by freshman Josh Danza (Pasadena/Archbishop Spaulding).

Through two games this season, three of the Mustangs' six goals and nine of their 15 points have come from freshmen.

Sophomore Tyler King (Parkville/Calvert Hall), who finished second on the team in goals and points a year ago, capped the scoring in the 69th minute with her first goal of the season, unassisted.

All three keepers on the Stevenson roster saw action Saturday night, highlighted by senior Adam Wiatrowski (Baltimore/Patapsco) who made five saves and allowed just one goal in 63 minutes.

The Mustangs return to action on Wednesday when they host local rival McDaniel at Caves Complex beginning at 4:00 p.m. Second-year head coach John Plevyak spent 13 seasons with the Green Terror before coming to Stevenson in 2007. He still holds the school record for coaching victories, but is looking for his first win over his former school after the two teams tied at McDaniel on Oct. 1, 2007, 1-1.
