King Scores Game-Winner in 2-1 Win Over McDaniel

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Sophomore Tyler King (Parkville/Calvert Hall) scored the game-winning goal in the 77th minute to cap a two-goal rally as the Stevenson University men's soccer team won its second-straight, beating McDaniel 2-1 Wednesday at the Caves Complex.
The win was the first for Mustang second-year head coach John Plevyak against his former school after the two teams battled to a 1-1 tie at McDaniel on Oct. 1, 2007. Plevyak spent 14 seasons at McDaniel before coming to Stevenson prior to the 2007 season. He left the Green Terror as the program's winningest coach, totaling 125 victories from 1993-2006.
The Mustangs (2-1) trailed 1-0 at halftime after being outshot 8-2. However, in the second half, Stevenson limited the Green Terror to just one shot while posting 12 of its own and netting goals from King and freshman Kyle Baker (Mitchellville/Bowie).
Before King scored the game-winner off an assist from freshman Ryan Brost (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley), Baker tied the game in the 64th minute on a penalty kick after being taken down in the box.
Wednesday's game was the second chapter in the local rivalry between Stevenson and McDaniel since Plevyak came to Owings Mills in 2007. The two teams, whose campuses are less than 20 miles apart, combined for 29 fouls and three yellow cards Wednesday after totaling 49 fouls and four yellow cards a year ago.
In addition to holding a 12-1 advantage in shots in the second half, the Mustangs also had a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.
Stevenson also missed two other excellent opportunities to add to its total when senior Ryan Payne (Millersville/Old Mill) sent a header from in the box just wide of the left post in the 59th minute and King had his breakaway attempt saved by diving Robert Hollasch in the 84th minute.
Hollasch finished with three saves for the Green Terror (1-2) as did Stevenson junior Adam Wiatrowski (Baltimore/Patapsco).
The Mustangs return to action on Friday at Penn State-Harrisburg in search of their three-game winning streak since Sept. 9, 2006. That year, the team started the season 4-0 en route to an 11-8 overall record.
