Hampden-Sydney Edges Stevenson Men's Soccer, 3-1

Box score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Hampden-Sydney's Bryan Wharton and Will Robertson hooked up twice to lead the Tigers to a 3-1 win over the Stevenson University men's soccer team in a physical contest Monday afternoon at the Caves Complex.

The two teams combined for eight yellow cards and 37 fouls as the Mustangs (2-4-1) dropped their third game out of the last four and second in four games at home this season.

Meanwhile, Hampden-Sydney (4-1) bounced back from its first loss of the season against Catholic at home on Saturday with a win in its first road contest this year.

After Wharton scored his third goal of the season in the 29th minute on a feed from Robertson, Stevenson tied it less than 10 minutes later when freshman Jake Stocksdale (Hampstead/North Carroll) scored his first career goal on a loose ball in the box that was crossed from senior Sal Caltabiano (Jarrettsville/Western Guilford (N.C.)) and deflected by Hampden-Sydney keeper John Robert Plyler.

Stocksdale is the six different Mustang to score in seven games this season for Stevenson.

The score would stay tied at 1-1 until the 79th minute when JoJo Howard scored his third goal of the season on a rebound after Robertson hit the post.

Robertson also set up the Tiger's third goal of the game, an insurance tally with seven seconds remaining, on a long ball to the far post from in front of the Hampden-Sydney bench where Wharton headed it in for his second goal of the game and fourth this season.

The Tigers held a 15-9 edge in shots, including 11-6 in the second half, while Plyler picked up his fourth win in goal after making one save and allowing just one goal to keep his goals against average below one at 0.88.

Senior Adam Wiatrowski (Baltimore/Patapsco) made two saves for Stevenson who has scored just one goal in their last four contests despite outshooting their opponents, 56-49.

The Mustangs continue their four-game homestand on Thursday when they welcome local rival Goucher to Caves Complex for a 4:30 p.m., contest.
