Stocksdale Scores Twice in 3-2 Double Overtime Loss

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Andrew Bull's header in the box off an assist from Tom Gray in the third minute of the second overtime gave Goucher a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Stevenson University men's soccer team Thursday evening at the Caves Complex in a game that featured 37 fouls and four yellow cards.
The loss was the fourth in the last five games for the Mustangs (2-5-1) who have been outscored 9-3 during that time with all three goals coming from freshman Jake Stocksdale (Hampstead/North Carroll) who had two more tallies on Thursday.
Despite scoring just three goals over its last 482:22, Stevenson has outshot its opponents 71-64 while holding a 31-22 advantage in corner kicks. However, the team has had just one more shot on goal over that span, 22-21, and has been outscored 5-1 in the first half.
On Thursday, Goucher (4-3) took a 1-0 halftime lead after Tim McMullen scored on a penalty kick in the 20th minute.
Neither team would score again until Stocksdale scored unassisted on a loose ball in the box to tie the game at 1-1 in the 69th minute.
Stocksdale would then add his second goal of the game and team-leading third of the season less than six minutes later off an assist from sophomore Tyler King (Parkville/Calvert Hall) to give the Mustangs their first lead of any kind since King scored the game-winner in the 77th minute of a 2-1 victory over McDaniel on September 3, a span of six games and 495:58.
The Gophers tied the game in the 81st minute when Jay Berger scored his first goal this year off an indirect kick that was assisted by Adam Boyce, forcing the game into overtime before Bull's team-leading fourth goal and second game-winner of the season.
Goucher almost ended the game in the first three minutes of the first overtime, but back-to-back shots on goal by Boyce and Julien Greco were cleared away by junior Vinny Cultabiano (Lothian/Mount Saint Joseph) and sophomore Sean Scarselletta (Severna Park/Severna Park) to keep the game tied.
Justin Holbrook made three saves while playing all 102:22 for the Gophers while Stevenson senior Adam Wiatrowski (Baltimore/Patapsco) stopped one shot in his eighth start before giving way to junior Dan McLeary (Baltimore/Parkville) who played the final 17:23.
The Mustangs look to end their five-game winless streak on Saturday when they welcome Shenandoah to the Caves Complex in the last of a four-game homestand. Game time is at 1:00 p.m.
