Mustang Men's Soccer Falls at Mary Washington, 4-1

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Stevenson University men's soccer senior Ryan Payne (Millersville/Old Mill) picked up his first point of the season on an assist to sophomore Sean Scarselleta (Severna Park/Severna Park), but the Mustangs fell on the road at Mary Washington, 4-1 Tuesday afternoon at the Battleground.

T.L. Tutor and Darien Ruggles each had a goal and an assist to lead the Eagles (7-2-1, 3-0 CAC) who remained unbeaten in conference play and in a first place tie with York (Pa.).

Mary Washington took a 1-0 lead just over four minutes in when Preston Hirten scored unassisted before Tutor scored what proved to be the game-winning goal on an assist from Ruggles in the 16th minute to give the Eagles a 2-0 halftime lead.

Stevenson (3-7-2 0-2-1 CAC) would hold Mary Washington without a goal over a span of 41:55 before a foul in the box led to a penalty kick goal by Tommy DiNuzzo in the 58th minute to increase the Eagle lead to 3-0.

Scarselletta would score his second goal of the season at 61:34, assisted by Payne on what was his first point since Sept. 22, 2007. The defender now has four goals and one assist over the last three seasons.

Ruggles would then pick up his own goal in the 79th minute, assisted by Tutor, to cap the scoring.

Mary Washington outshot Stevenson 14-7, doubling them up in each half, while the Mustangs held an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.

Freshman Ryan Flannelly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) made three saves for Stevenson in his second career start in goal while counterpart Emmett Rutkowski also stopped three shots.

The Mustangs wrap up their four-game roadtrip on Saturday when they travel to Lancaster Bible. Game time is at 1:00 p.m.
