Mustangs Win Third-Straight, End Season on Senior Day

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Eight different players scored one goal each while another two added assists, highlighted by two from freshman Josh Danza (Pasadena/Archbishop Spalding), as the Stevenson University men's soccer team closed out its 2008 season with an 8-0 victory over Gallaudet Thursday afternoon at the Caves Complex.
The Mustangs (7-9-2, 3-4-1 CAC) finished the season with three consecutive wins, all against conference opponents, including a 1-0 victory over Wesley who is the No. 4 seed in the CAC Men's Soccer Championship.
All three wins also came by shutout as Stevenson outscored its opponents, 11-0.
Thursday's game also marked the final game in the careers of seniors Sal Caltabiano (Greensboro/Western Guilford), Billy DePaola (Perry Hall/Towson Catholic) and Ryan Payne (Millersville/Old Mill).
Payne finished the game with his seventh career goal, scoring unassisted in the 55th minute to give the Mustangs a 5-0 lead while Caltabiano finished his two-year career with three goals and DePaola had three goals and one assist.
Four of Stevenson's eight goal scorers registered their first goals of the season highlighted by Payne's tally in his final game and junior Adam Wiatrowski (Baltimore/Patapsco) who scored his first career goal after posting five wins, including four by shutout, and a 1.61 goals against average in 15 games in goal.
Other Mustangs picking up their first career goals included freshmen Sam Bryant (Burlington Township, N.J./Burlington Township) and Alex Hilliard (Dulles, Va./American International).
Sophomore Tyler King (Parkville/Calvert Hall) scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 43rd minute to finish the season with 13 points, four ahead of freshman Jake Stocksdale (Hampstead/North Carroll) who had nine after scoring his fourth goal on Thursday.
In goal, freshman Ryan Flannelly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) picked up his first career win in 45 minutes after making his fourth start of the season. Junior Dan McLeary (Baltimore/Parkville).
Stevenson outshot the Bison (0-18, 0-8 CAC) 36-1 and held an 11-0 advantage in corner kicks.
