Stevenson Opens 2008 Season with 2-1 Home Loss

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Tony Armiger's goal off a cross from Conor Halesworth with 51 seconds remaining gave Washington (Md.) a 2-1 victory over Stevenson University Friday afternoon at the Caves Complex in the season opener for both teams.

Armiger tallied a goal and an assist for the Shoremen (1-0) who won their third-straight season opener under three-year head coach Drew Hoffman.

Meanwhile, the loss ended a three-game winning streak for Stevenson (0-1) on opening day, dating back to 2004 when the Mustangs lost 1-0 to Dickinson.

Ironically, Stevenson started the streak with a 1-0 win at home over Washington in 2005.

Friday's game was marred by a heavy rain that lasted throughout the contest that made shots and ball control difficult for both teams.

However, Halesworth was able to gain control of a loose ball in to the left of the Stevenson net and cross it to Armiger who drove the ball into the lower 90 from about 10 yards out to seal the win for the Shoremen.

Despite holding a 9-5 edge in shots in the first half, the Mustangs were able to tie the game in the 73rd minute when freshman Kyle Baker (Mitchellville/Bowie) scored of an assist from freshman John Adamo (Glassboro, N.J./Washington Township) that snuck just under the crossbar over a reaching Chris Phipps.

Phipps made five first half saves to hold Stevenson scoreless while teammate Jordan Haas was able to capitalize on the Shoremen's few attempts by netting his first career goal at 21:30. Armiger and Tom Heppard both picked up assists after Heppard sent a free kick to
Armiger who headed the ball to Haas in the box.

The Mustangs were outshot 7-3 in the second half forcing senior Adam Wiatrowski (Baltimore/Patapsco) to make three saves. He finished the game with six as did Phipps for Washington.

Despite the huge shot advantage for the Shoremen in the second half, each team finished with 12 shots while Stevenson held a 9-6 edge in shots and an 11-10 margin in fouls.

The Mustangs return to action tomorrow night when they travel to Albright of the MASCAC Commonwealth Conference. Game time is at 7:00 p.m.
