OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson men's soccer team will open its 2013 season this weekend at home on Friday, August 30 against La Roche at 7:00 p.m. in the two-day Monarch Mortgage Kick-Off Tournament hosted at Stevenson University and McDaniel College.
Last season the Mustangs finished with an 8-10-1 record, falling one game short of making the conference tournament in their first season in the Commonwealth Conference. They return senior Christopher Panian (Monkton, Md./John Carroll) who was named to the All-Commonwealth Conference First Team and junior Yianni Sarioglou (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall) who was the 2011 All-CAC Rookie of the Year.
The Mustangs were picked to finish sixth in the Commonwealth Conference Preseason Coaches Poll released on Monday. The 2012 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer National Champion, Messiah, who was ranked at No. 1 in the NSCAA Men's Division III Preseason Poll on August 13, was a unanimous decision to repeat as Commonwealth Conference championship for the seventh consecutive season.
La Roche finished last season with a 9-10 record, advancing to the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Semifinals and the ECAC Division III South Men's Soccer First Round. This season they are picked to finish third in the AMCC and return junior Bryan Weimerskirch who was named the Preseason Co-Player of the Year.
Stevenson will wrap up the Monarch Mortgage Kick-Off Tournament on Saturday, August 31 against Southern Vermont. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
McDaniel will host Southern Vermont on Friday at 4:00 p.m. and then La Roche on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
