OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Led by three saves by sophomore Kenneth Hersey (Clarksville, Md./Atholton), the Stevenson men's soccer team battled Neuman to a 0-0 tie in double overtime at Mustang Stadium on Wednesday.
The Mustangs (2-0-1) have allowed only goal in three games this season, outscoring their opponents 9-1. Their last double overtime game was a season ago on Oct. 20, 2012 when they finished with a 4-4 tie against Albright.
Hersey has posted 200 shutout minutes in two games this season, totaling seven saves.
With 27 seconds remaining in regulation, Joe Martinho had a chance to win the game for the Knights (1-1-1) but Hersey made a sliding kick save to send the game to overtime.
Meanwhile, junior Yianni Sarioglou (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall) and senior Christopher Panian (Monkton, Md./John Carroll) had back-to-back chances in front of the goal to give the Mustangs the win in the final two minutes of the second overtime but Sarioglou sent a shot high while Panian headed it over the crossbar.
The Mustangs outshot Neumann 14-10 including 7-1 in the two overtime periods. The Knights held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Stevenson travels to Wilkes for a non-conference matchup on Saturday, September 7 beginning at 4:00 p.m.
